Poor Christine Beatty -- NOT!

Freep staff writer Joe Swickard's story on C. Beatty got me a little pissed. Oh, yes, now she's a single mom trying to make ends meet and rebuild her life, no longer the high-flying city official who, when caught speeding by patrolmen, asked them if they knew "who the $[[#*" she was. No longer the woman who treated cops doing their duty "worse than dope men." No longer calling the chief of police on the phone to avoid a ticket. No longer the corrupt chief of staff colluding with a criminal mayor on how to fire honest cops.

You know what? You give people power, and power tests them. They do something wrong, and it shows they didn't deserve that power. Are we supposed to feel sorry for her facing her comeuppance? For falling from power that corrupted her so completely?

I just want her to disappear so I never have to see her name again. Don't set up anybody up for a comeback, please. CB: We know exactly who the $%*# you are.

It was an interesting juxtaposition, CB's situation, compared with her former paramour's. But it did strike me as presuming a lot, without an interview with her, to say that she's learned more from the incident than KK did.
How can we know?

We can't. I think Swickard is hinting at a double-standard when it comes to the way they're being treated. But there's a double-standard, too, in seeing Kwame's crimes clearly and seeming so sympathetic to the "woman done wrong." If CB's a victim, she has only herself to blame.

Something in the back of my head makes me believe that her and KK have a lot of money stashed away. Bobby F got a lot of work out of those two, don't tell me that some of that profit didn't go back to CB and KK.

I agree, Softrail....if not, how has she survived all this time with no income? I mean, how do you buy food and pay the utility bills, school clothes etc without ANY income? I don't believe anything either one of them say. They are both accomplished liars. I have no sympathy for them. If it were any one of us that did these things, we would be languishing in jail for many many years. As the saying goes...power corrupts....absolute power corrupts absolutely.

If they weren't smart enough to figure out that those text messages on their city owed cell phones wouldn't eventually show up somewhere...then they weren't smart enough to stash some money somewhere...that's what happens when you use your genitalia to think with.

If my friends were paying my bills I could afford to shop at Gucci's, get my hair and nails done every week, and have a little body work done too.....

I don't feel sorry for her, but I think her story provides a good lesson for women on why they should not get romantically involved with their boss, especially if he is married and is a rotten crook.

With all of the money KK is languishing in, you can bet he's sending her money monthly to help her live. She's leasing a Land Rover, for pete's sake. You can't live that on unemployment, and I'm not buying their story about how she's living on her savings -- that would have run out long ago. I think KK is sending her hush money and will continue to do so until the statute of limitations expires on his crimes.

When she came out of jail they said she only had $7.50.

While I don't feel sorry for her, I certainly have more patience with her than Kilpatrick. She resigned early on, and didn't drag the scandal out; did her jail time; and has been repaying her debt to the city, without help from Peter Karmanos or other rich business.

No, I don't like her, and I'm not trying to defend what she did. But she doesn't make me anywhere near as angry as Kilpatrick.

I don't believe it is cognitive dissonance, at all, to recognize what she did to herself and the city, and to also recognize that women in these situations almost always come out the worst for them.

In the two stories done on her, I didn't see anything begging us to elicit sympathy for her, rather to paint a realistic picture of the outcomes of these type of affairs. To often when a lot of folks read these things, they feel as if they have to take sides. Guess what? You can actually think more deeply about something than that. I know, surprise, right?

Sorry Lowell, you and I are at the opposite end of the poles on this one. You don't just do the crime and then do your time. You spend your life making up for the bad you've done. As it should be. Soon enough, she'll be back to practicing law with a politically connected law firm. I'm hoping all will NOT be forgotten. It shouldn't be. She doesn't necessarily have to pay for the rest of her life, but if she has any conscience, she'll never forget what took place. It'll be with her every day of her life. She's awfully lucky compared to most stiffs who experience a conviction. Look at people who've experienced a sex related offense. They get run out of towns and states. And, I believe she still has her law license. CB mixed corruption with arrogance. Her fall was long and hard. Thuuuuuuud. Too bad.

Thinking deeply? Empathy? Sympathy? Feelings? Relating to? All good concepts in their proper place. I save those for people who realize the wrongs they committed and work at correcting and paying back for those wrongs. I've had to scrutinize my actions in my life and at times apologize and make good. I've never remotely approached doing what CB and KK did. I still look at myself in the mirror. I'm not comparing CB's wrongdoings to KK's, but she was wrong nonetheless. She has to deal with it. If people capping on her is part of the deal - so be it. I'm still angry about what took place.

It seems to me that she does have remorse. I was very offended by her abuse of power. It seemed so stupid to treat those cops like that because the potential damage to her career could have been and was indeed cataclysmic........ghetto mentality?

As for her law career she was in law school so as a convicted felon I am unsure of how it all works. According to Wiki she is currently not in school.

She didn't seem to have much remorse in the midst of it all while still attending law school. She was prancing around campus like a pony in a show. Maybe she is overcompensating for something. Or maybe she really does think she is better than other people.

Why are people still angry? Well, they cost the city $8M+ and I don't see that ever coming back.

Regardless of how one feels for her- whether it's sympathy, remorse, hatred or disdain, it just makes me think if I were in her shoes... why would I stick around this area?

Simply put, she's tainted goods. Move out to another state and try to start new. Get a new do, change your name, do something to revive your career! Have some Carlita-esque surgery if you must... but I can't see her being an asset to anyone here in the Detroit area. Even if she was a superb lawyer, would you as a prospective client feel comfortable hiring her?

Whether she's remorseful or not, that's her call. I hope that she is. She abused her power and got slapped down for it- not just in the court of law but by the court of public opinion. But as a fellow human being, I hope she can start new somewhere else and hopefully she can rebuild her life somehow someway.
