The news reported yesterday said that Ed Dwight at age 90
became the oldest man sent into space when he went up in a
Blue Origin space ship. He played a role is designing one of
the sculptures that grace our Motor City.
He was nominated by President Kennedy to be the first
African American astronaut but he never went into space at a
young age. After his stunted astronaut career he moved to
Denver. He became good friends with the first African American to serve as lieutenant governor in Colorado. Dwight became
interested in art and sculpture. The lieutenant governor asked him to sculpt a statue of an African American man who played a role in the state's history. Dwight then went back to college to
earn a degree in fine arts.
When Hart Plaza was updated, historians wanted a
commemoration of the important role it played in helping
several thousand US slaves escape bondage. There was a
competition and Ed Dwight won the commission to sculpt
the statues that stand in Hart Plaza now.
