thanks all for the replies. the information about the state fair was news to me. likewise, the earth community / hippie house thing was a hoot. and yeah the wwj building qualifies as the sort of architectural landmark i was referencing. are there any images of the bel-aire drive in? i liked poobert's imagery of the repeating “scooby do” background loop. too much of america seems to be modeled after that cookie cutter fast food / retail chain, rosary bead rhythm of strip mall “architecture”. thanks again.
There are some photos of the Bel-Air here: http://waterwinterwonderland.com/dri...x?id=29&Type=1
Ted Rogvoy was the architect.
In the early 50s John F Ivory polo grounds where located at 8 Mile and Lahser road. At one time the old club house still stood behind what is now a vacant furniture store. We also had the West Side Drive In at 8 Mile and Greenfield.
There are a couple of interesting buildings on Van Dyke that I've been to:I took Van Dyke from Detroit up to 30 mile-or-so for a wedding 5 years ago. It was like the background of a Scooby Do cartoon repeating itself over and over. I thought, "How could there be a God that would allow this to happen?" It's all so bland and crappy. Then it makes people think someplace like is Ferndale is cool, just because it isn't that.
