I agree with you Ray, it's not something I feel like singing about. I think it may be because we were both involved, in related ways. You were in it and so was my dad. I really don't like remember the fear of him not coming home and the things he saw.
In my opinion Detroit was dying many years before that incident. I grew up on the west side and remember my parents and I leaving in 1956 after a neighbor woman was mugged while going to a local bakery. We were part of the "White Flight" that preceded the riot. I left MI for a job in upstate NY in 1967 and visited frequently until 1973 when both my parents died. I visited last year and was dismayed at how bad Detroit had become. I doubt that it can ever return to be the great city it once was and that is too bad. I wish the people that live there well.
