I heard an interview with the owner of the Magic Bag on WDET yesterday and yes, he's tried to engage the event. He's had ZERO success. He's had a late night showing of "Rebel Without a Cause" a few years back for FREE and hardly anyone showed. The only mild success that he's had has been to have Bo Diddley play there and I guess that was even limited success. According to him if one doesn't sell cheap food or have parking, this weekend is a loss to them.
He sounded open for suggestions though.
I'm not so sure how he could engage this event. He's got one of those businesses that requires an active consumer participation within his facility- and on a day when the focus is on what's on the streets, it's got to be tough.
It's not unrealistic to expect some retail "casualties" this weekend. But the way I would embrace this weekend is to call it a holiday for them and their employees. People complain when they have to work and now people are complaining of people having to take a weekend off. This is a damned if you do, damned if you don't event for people.
