gun shots fired about 20 minutes ago at the corner of Park and Adams.

Yeah I heard those too...woke me up actually. Just waiting for someone to die. This is really going to hurt the appeal of any new residential development around GCP. LAX needs to go.

I know I'm probably dreaming and this probably wont amount to anything....

I don't live in downtown but I know people who do- well as it is i really cant afford downtown anyway. Regardless I love spending time there and rarely if ever feel threatened there. Hearing about all these clubs/shootings is obviously very troubling. and for me at the very least I'm going to try to steer clear of those areas; last thing i need is to get hit by a stray bullet from some rageaholic clown who's willing to kill someone who scuffed his pumas.

Someone who lives in say the kales needs to start a petition of everyone in the building [[and circulate it to other buildings downtown) and have it signed by everyone who's becoming increasingly concerned by the shootings and violence. I'm sure many many signatures can be obtained pretty recently.

Now say what you will about mayor Bing, but he's not a complete idiot. this petition gets sent directly to his office and basically has thousands of signatures of people who are threatening to leave if something doesn't change. This is one threat he has to take seriously; he isn't going to sacrifice one of the few glimmers of hope in his administration not to mention pressure from building owners, and other establishments downtown. Even if he was completely corrupt he can't ignore the kind of money that could flee his downtown [[and im sure its more than he would get from club owners)

oh and i forgot to ask what LAX is?

this could even go a step further... heck see if you can get some police officers to sign it too. The police dept is having to waste a lot of their resources keeping order here when they could be making patrols through neighborhoods. the squeaky wheel gets the grease....

Sounds like a good idea. I'd sign if I could... but I don't live downtown. This needs to get to the mayors desk asap!

I didn't go out last night, so before bed I decided to do a little people watching. As soon as I look over my balcony, I see a group of guys push a man to the ground and start beating him. They were on grand river between Griswold and Washington. The guy tried to get away, but they went after him. An old lady on the corner yelling at them finally got them to stop. The man took off running toasted MGM, wiping the blood from his face. I have no idea why they attacked him, but I don't feel safe down here anymore. I was hoping to live here a couple more years, then buy a house in midtown or corktown.....but I don't know anymore. These past several months have scared the he'll out of me to walk ANYWHERE here anymore

Again, there was some bullshit going on at Kingdom just before 2AM last night. About 5 squad cars had Congress blocked off and people were scattering in a frenzy. Shut that fucking place down.

Back in another life [[smile) when I used to visit MGM and Motor City casinos late a night sometimes I witnessed alot of rowdy behavior such as brawls including a wall of teens running across Woodward, breaking heels coming out of that stupid club Blue [[sp?) when they used to do the 'teen' night thing [[which on one night culminated in the murder shooting of a teen). I'd was driving by so not directly effected but I'd not want to walk about late at night around any of the clubs or some of the more questionable intersections. And witnessing a beat-down would not be my weekend highlight....

I imagine we have many or most of the major residential buildings downtown represented on this forum. For every 1 dyes'r on here theres probably a few hundred others who are just as concerned. Get signatures in your building and send them straight to bing's office. If i lived in one of those bldgs i would have done this a week ago.

Like i said i dont think bing is totally unreasonable. He's a businessman at heart and understands that a problem like this affects money flowing downtown [[in fact he may not even be aware of the seriousness of the problem) Getting thousands of people to say this is a serious problem [[and possibly threatening to leave) should get his attention. Take it a step further and you could have business owners, police, even bing and gilbert on his ass about it. The one thing you all have in common is that this activity is bad for your quality of life/bottom line. I doubt bing is willing to throw away the only real piece of good news he has for a few bucks from club owners.

Even if you're planning on moving anyway, at least do it for the sake of remaining and future residents. I'm not trying to force you to do anything [[I'd be the first one if i lived there) but at least trying to change things is better than just bitching about it on a forum.

I believe that the solution to this ongoing problem with these chaotic clubs is quite simple. You must beef up the security and metal detectors and dress atttire and search the people at the door and no backpacks or big bags or purses and the list could go on and on. The major issue here is that the security in the clubs do NOT enforce this stuff because they know this person and grew up with that person and his boy/girl is friends with his boy/girl. They even get paid off to look the other way at times. This is a major problem in Detroit, and NOT in just the club scene.

That could work to prevent incident INSIDE these clubs, but don't the lion share of these incidents occur OUTSIDE these clubs?

In other words, how would the club owners be able to legally and constitutionally prevent things that happen outside their establishment and likely away from their property?

Royal Oak charges business located dtown RO a special fee for increased police patrol of the dtown RO area. That system could work in Detroit.

Same problem here in my town of 80,000 which is trying to shut down 2 hellholes that cause huge problems with fights and at closing every night and many of the other problems associated with hip hop clubs and its nothing but a losing fight, city being sued, nice folks being called racists and all kinds of crap.
The club owners defense is "how can we be held responsible for what people do outside our clubs ?"

Metal detectors at the door ? Thats fine pistols get left in cars while thugs with hurt feelings lay in wait.

I don't live in Kales, but I agree with you wholeheartedly. If you live downtown, click below, follow the instructions and sign the letter. If you don't live downtown, send me the PM anyway, and I'll edit the letter appropriately and I'll send it to you.

I was excited intially when I saw work being done in the building next to Rub Pub. Then they put up the lettering and I assumed it would be a night club. I held out hope that it would be one that catered to the non-Hip-Hop crowd [[maybe it's just me but the electronic music crowd seems to be less violent). Then they opened and for the first time in the two years I've lived here I have heard gunshots, witnessed large street fights, and am considering moving to another part of detroit where these clubs are not. These places if this continues should be required to pay additional fees for the nights they are open to have extra DPD foot patrols in the area especially between 12:30 and 2:30AM.

The letter has some strong points but also room for improvement. I also added a suggestion that might actually solve the problem.

    room for letter improvement:
cars driving by with loud music, not regulated elsewhere in the city, no connection to LAX
one instance of a person blocking the parking structure is not a systemic problem
loitering, sidewalk is public property, no other illegal activity [[prostitution, drug dealling) taking place

there is some substance to the gunfights and fistfights
also the police can issue parking tickets, make sure the double parkers are not valet

    Possible solution
Last summer, the police would park two vehicles in the center lane of Broadway after 10pm on the weekends. There would be one large police van and a squad car. There would be 5 or so officers standing outside there vehicles.
They would block off car traffic to prevent showboating by loud cars passing by the clubs.

A stationary squad car creates a different presence than intermittent police drive bys.
A stationary squad car at Adams and Park with another at Adams and Montcalm after 11pm on Saturday and Sunday would have a great affect on the area.

There are two options for police presence.
Request presence from the city, ideally with support from the local bars.
Directly pay for police presence. CoD police are not available for afterhours employment. The afterhours police wear there badge and use the CoD police car. I can't remember what the hourly rate is. You may be able to convince the club owners in the area to pay for two vehicles on the agreement that they all pay.

Kales resident here. Boycott RUB BBQ. They are the folks who issued the lease to LAX for the club space. I emailed Rub BBQ to let them know we will no longer patronize them and actively discourage others from doing so, as well. Please spread the word and hit them where it hurts: the wallet.

I go to Rub BBQ now and then. They will no longer receive my business, as long as they make money off mayhem.

Wow, I'm floored...I appreciate all the responses, both on the forum and via private message. Mine already went out but I will incorporate some of these changes for others who ask for them.

I've also included Dominic Yono, owner of Rub BBQ on the cc list. We will definitely be getting their attention.

Hang out at Tropical Hutt Lounge on Saturday or Boogie Fever with mature middle aged crowds. The Hutt has a mostly Carribean-african immigrant- visitor crowd although a few ghetto types slip, slide and slither in on occasion. The Hutt tended to be a warm and welcoming place, was one of my spots before I finally retired from the Playboy set and settled down.

There are just too many young rowdies and undesirables lurking about and running in packs downtown on a Saturday night in the D. Go to the blues spot on Chene..always forget the name of the joint...down home cookin and blues and they didnt seem to mind when me and my wife got up and boogied down by the table...very mature and welcoming crowd.....

    ahhh the memories.
