I was under the impression a gun was nothing but a "glorified bookend".
according to the laws in Michigan,the parents purchased and stored the gun legally,no different then it would have applied to a “glorified bookend” .

It appears as if the crux of the prosecutors case revolves around a text that the mother sent that said “don’t do it”.

But the text was sent after the father heard of the shooting,looked for the gun and found out it was missing from the lock box,and called 911 to tell them the gun was missing and the mother said the text was referring to “don’t do it” as in do not commit suicide.
