I'm with Django on this. I can absolutely say that Gnome is a great guy. He does like to fuck with people...don't take it so seriously....it's the internet.

It's art, and it's trash. Interesting but pointless to Detroit. The city has much more to worry about.
It's art because Tryee does not allow anyone to photograph or video tape it without permission even though most of it is on public property.
Funny......because I've seen plenty of people photographing and videoing Heidelberg. And I've seen many photos of it. Who does Tyree think he is......The Grand Poobah of the Heidelberg Dynasty?
Oh god. I can see that people are still crabby on here. This is just a forum about Detroit. It's not like he's submitting art to the New Yorker for intelligent criticism. I believe the point was to just start a discussion.
Anyway! Yes, I consider it art. I actually wouldn't mind if these houses were next to mine. It would be a lot more interesting to look versus what I have now.
Of course it's art. Did he ever explain himself/his vision for the piece? I always saw it as sort of a take on ruin porn. And people can interpret artworks differently, of course, but it would be interesting to see what his vision was.
It's TRASH masquerading as Art.Well watch it and post Your opinion... Art or Trash? ---->http://youtu.be/TwB6I5EohYc
Art or trash? For me, personally, it really comes down to perspective, location and expectation.
Expectation- Would I expect to see something better than that if I was going to see art in New York, Chicago, the DIA, etc.? Hell yes.
Grade based on Expectation ----Trash.
Location- It is free to look at and it is in a neighborhood in Detroit so I guess it can be considered art. At least to those people that turn their noses up to Detroit and celebrate anything that makes the City look bad. But, since I don't consider myself one of those people, I won't consider it art.
Grade based on Location-------Trash.
Perspective- I've seen some very stylish graffiti in my day. But, lo and behold, the property owner, who didn't commission the graffiti artist, to tag, oh excuse me, I mean use the property as their canvas, ended up having to remove the graffiti or face getting a ticket because it violated the city code.
Which poses a question, would trash or art even be a question if it was Matty Moroun or Bert Dearing that was responsible for simply nailing stuffed animals to the property and spraying polka dots on the houses? Didn't think so.
Grade based on Perspective-----Trash.
Let's face it, anywhere other than Detroit, it's considered trash. The fact that it can be argued as art in Detroit speaks to the culture of low expectations and self loathing that permeate from the streets, to the school system, to city hall and into the minds of the residents.
In which case, it represents a lot of the things that is wrong with Detroit today.
Final Grade---Art
Until, as a city, we're prepared not to tolerate bullshit like the Heidleberg Project, we'll always be stuck with bullshit like the Heidleberg Project.

Thanks for the video. Just for the record, the buried Hummer was courtesy of Code Pink when they were in town last spring for the US Social Forum. They had a ceremony where they buried the Hummer and put the bike in front. The flowers are growing in nicely.
Art.
And just what was snotty and/or overly critical about what I posted? Let's be honest, if it wasn't for the fact that it is a sweeping indictment of the City of Detroit, that heap of shit wouldn't get any play.
And before anyone starts on the "people come from all over to see it, take pictures, and record it" nonsense, let's remember that the same thing held true for devil's night. So that, should be taken with a serious grain of salt.
Face it, trying to justify that shit as art is akin to making a silk purse out of a pig's ear.
.... it's a loathsome offensive sight.... yet I can't look away....
