    You know there are some people that have had it with Slow's. His business ethics can be a touchy subject in Corktown, just ask a couple of the people working at the Mana Meals soup kitchen in St. Peter's.

    Do you mean the guy who opened Le Petit Zinc in Corktown and credits Phil with helping him negotiate all the barriers that the City put in his way? Or maybe you mean the activists who are so terrified of gentrification that they are always bad-mouthing the Cooleys for investing in the neighborhood? The people who want the neighborhood to house only poor people

    Oh please please please! I hope so too... as I much as I love going in there and having a beer while I wait, sometimes it's just not possible to get their delicious food to go because of how busy they are serving those who are sitting down to eat... it would be fantastic to be able to call ahead and pick up some of that delicious pork/brisket/macncheese. Oh boy...I'm drooling all over my keyboard...lol.

    I haven't heard anything on this lately, I'd ask an owner or manager at Slows. But I think it was suppose to go on the first floor of Willy's Overland Lofts on Willis between Cass and Second. That would be rad!

    As far as Slow's business practices... having exploitative conditions is not acceptible. But is that reason to kick one of the only succesfull businesses out? I don't think so. It is great to have thriving places like this. We need more of them. But we also don't want places that make a big profit but don't give anything to their workers.

    One of the main reasons why Mercury Coffee Bar closed was their treatment of workers... hiring way to many, giving them little to no hours, etc. Let's hope they open back up with new practices.

    Could this be the thread that kills Slow's, just like the thread that killed Zacarro's or the one that nearly killed Eph's?
    As far as the second location, the credit market and really tightened up and hinders things like this. Cash is king and there is not a lot of it around.
    As far as business ethics go, it is pretty shitty to flame someone and have nothing to back it up. Do you prefer the pawn shop to me the busiest business on the block? As always, Detroit's worst enemy is it's own citizens.

    You're partially correct. Putting a rack of ribs on a 55-gallon drum grill does not make one a BBQ capital. It also doesn't make you barbecue, since you're cooking over the high heat of a grill.

    Kansas City style? It's a joke. Take any old meat of your choosing, and use ridiculously liberal amounts of a version of Lexington-style sauce [[available in a plastic bottle at any old grocery store coast-to-coast), and that's barbeque???

    KC barbeque has only been around for about 100 years. And I'm sure you'd find many Southerners laugh at your assertion that KC is the "the place to go" for pork.

    I don't think anyone ever said Slows exploits it's workers.

    Someone above mentioned that there are a bunch of bitter, ultralefty idiots in corktown and swdetroit who think operating a wildly successful business in detroit and wanting that strip of Michigan ave. to be something more than just a string of abandoned storefronts and soup kitchens is. . .gasp. . . "gentrification." I wish all the anti-gentrification people would move to east st. louis or gary indiana. I'm sure they would love it there. they could start a thriving community of anti-gentrifyers, with art galleries and coffee shops with "spoken word" nights and speeches about diversity and soup kitchens and special alleys for crackheads to defecate in and hookers to blow their johns without gentrifying hipsters to get upset about it! that is, until the yuppies move in and ruin everything.

    I didn't say that I'm against gentrification _ I'm all for it [[as I am an example of it and I'd like to see more. You mis-read my comments. i was writing to Izzy and being alittle sarcastic at his post that the workers at the Manna Kitchen think poorly of Slows, for whatever reason. Go back and re-read.

    Some people at DY think if you say something critical, negative or unnice about a business, place or the city, it's sabotaged. So what if Eph's, the MCB or Detroit was mentioned in a less than flattering manner? A lot others post their support. If Detroit and it's businesses can't survive negative comments here at DY, it's not worth surviving. The criticism or praise they get's here makes very little difference. The whole point of this website is to talk about stuff, no matter if it's called DetroitYes. I've been in and around the city all of my life. The worst offenders are the 'Don't say nothing bad' people, because they won't listen to any reason. They do the greatest disservice to Detroit. Negative nabobs [[I borrowed that from Spiro) need to go, live and hangout somewhere else if they see no good in Detroit, it's people and businesses. But criticism is another thing.

    Slows B.B.Q. is one of Corktown hot popular spots in Corktown. If you all want to eat there, make sure a have a early reservation.

    I've been to slows a few times and liked it but then I discovered RedSmoke and it just blows it away. The pulled pork, mac and cheese, and the cornbread are just off the charts.

    I've only had Slows ala events they catered so the waiting was not an issue, but the food was great! I suppose I will try the carry out option near Midtown. Where's Redsmoke?

    Whenever I've been, and that's probably once a month or so, it's always a 1-2 hour wait according to the hostess, but my group is always seated in less then 45 minutes. So walk up to the bar, grab a drink, and the time goes by fast. What's the deal with their expansion? I've seen progress being made. Any date on when they are to open that up?

    Love slows. It's a requirement that I go there whenever I'm in Detroit on business.
