The average American can't name a single Supreme Court justice; they can't pass a US citizenship test; and they've become more likely to believe in tinfoil hat conspiracy theories than in global climate change. All of this makes you wonder if Americans have become too stupid for democracy. Ring of Fire host Mike Papantonio discusses how American citizens are painfully ignorant about the majority of issues that affect our day-to-day lives with Ring of Fire co-host Sam Seder.
The traditional, mainstream media has been slowly dying for decades. And in its place, independent, non-profit media outlets are becoming the only source for honest, investigative reporting. Ring of Fire host Mike Papantonio talks about the importance of independent media with David Pakman, host of The David Pakman Show.
The following interview is from the April 21st, 2013 episode of Ring of Fire on Free Speech TV. The gap between the "Haves" and the "Have Nots" continues to grow at an alarming rate. The following interview is from the April 21st, 2013 episode of Ring of Fire on Free Speech TV. The dishonest and risky behavior of investors on Wall Street helped push our country deep into a recession. The toxic trash being traded by investors still poses a very real, and very dangerous threat to the finances of people who aren't even involved in the stock market. Ring of Fire host Mike Papantonio talks to attorney Mike Burg about Wall Street's big gamble.
A couple of weeks ago, President Obama, in the darkness of night, signed legislation that obliterated something called the STOCK Act -- it was an act that demanded that senior, high-ranking federal employees disclose their financial holdings so taxpayers could be certain that there were no conflicts, bias, or favoritism in their decision-making. The bill was designed to prevent insider trading. It was there to help taxpayers understand how a high-ranking federal employee might come into office with $100 thousand dollar net worth and leave office a multi-millionaire.
As a matter of fact, you might remember the ceremonial signing of that act just a year ago, where President Obama signed that Act with cameras flashing, and TV cameras rolling, when our president proclaimed that the STOCK Act was vital to stop corruption, to make sure that transparency would be preserved in his administration.

Ring of Fire host Mike Papantonio discusses how these companies use the Courts for personal gain with investigative journalist David Dayen.

Anti-intellectualism and anti-rationalism have become almost epidemic in America. In fact, a talented writer by the name of Susan Jacoby wrote an important book several years ago titled The Age of American Unreason. The only hesitation anyone should have about reading that book is that it is pretty scary stuff.
According to Jacoby, more than 40 percent of Americans under 44 never read a single book in the course of an entire year. Americans of all ages are losing their ability to concentrate and analyze what they hear. In fact, the rule of thumb for a political candidate was that they needed to deliver their political message in around 40 seconds; today that political sound bite needs to be delivered in eight seconds to match our ability to concentrate.
Mike Papantonio of Ring of Fire talks with Thom Hartmann about the handling of the Boston marathon bombing suspect, and how Republicans are furious that the man won't be tried as an enemy combatant.
Last year, the top ten hedge fund managers in America made an average of one billion dollars a piece. Meanwhile, the average wage for America's workers has been steadily declining for more than a decade. Ring of Fire's Mike Papantonio talks to author Les Leopold about why American CEOs are getting million dollar paydays, while wages for their workers continue to decline.
When pressed for answers as to why wealthy Americans choose to hide their fortunes in offshore accounts, they typically give the right wing response that America's taxes are too high. But a new report by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists shows us that the tax dodging is just a small part of the puzzle. Ring of Fire's Mike Papantonio speaks with economist Richard Wolff to discuss the report.
For the last 6 years, our elected officials have doled out money to the wealthy elite in the form of bailouts and tax breaks. Their hope was that this money would then stimulate the economy by trickling down to the rest of the country. But the one common sense method that they never tried was raising the minimum wage for America's working class. Ring of Fire's Mike Papantonio talks to Richard Eskow from the Campaign for America's future about how raising the minimum wage would help stimulate our economy.
The following interview is from the April 28th, 2013 episode of Ring of Fire on Free Speech TV. Ring of Fire host Mike Papantonio talks about the latest example of corporate wrongdoing that whistleblowers exposed with attorney Chris Paulos.
The following interview is from the April 28th, 2013 episode of Ring of Fire on Free Speech TV. The former Bush administration launched a war that most of the media ignored -- and that was the war on whistleblowers in the administration. Unfortunately, President Obama has continued that tradition. The Obama administration has spent more time and resources going after whistleblowers than they have Wall Street criminals. Ring of Fire host Mike Papantonio talks to attorneys Howard Nations and Dave Teselle about the continued assault on government whistleblowers.
Thanks to a lack of prosecutions from our Justice Department and a completely Wall Street-owned Congress, financial reform has come to a complete halt in America. The Obama administration's talking head people, like Mary Miller, are constantly backing away from reform. Ring of Fire's Mike Papantonio talks to investigative journalist David Dayen about why the concept of finance reform has died.
The following interview is from the April 28th, 2013 episode of Ring of Fire on Free Speech TV. The time is up for Americans to submit their comments to the state department on the Keystone XL pipeline, and soon we'll have a decision from the administration on whether or not this pipeline will be constructed. Ring of Fire host Mike Papantonio talks about how disastrous the Keystone XL pipeline would be with Farron Cousins, the executive editor of The Trial Lawyer Magazine and a contributing writer for DeSmogBlog.com.
Before President Obama took office, GOP leaders told us that deficits don't matter. But now that a Democrat is in the White House, they can't seem to quit whining about our budget deficit. But the truth is that they were actually right when they said deficits don't matter. Ring of Fire's Mike Papantonio talks to economist Dean Baker to find out why.
The following interview is from the April 28th, 2013 episode of Ring of Fire on Free Speech TV. In the past, when a lawmaker became too extreme for their own good, the voters would boot that person out of office. But thanks to Republican gerrymandering, extreme views are allowed to stay in Washington. Ring of Fire host Mike Papantonio talks to author and trial lawyer Niall McCarthy about how dangerous this is for our Democracy.
The following interview is from the April 28th, 2013 episode of Ring of Fire on Free Speech TV. Republicans have a strangle hold on state governments throughout the south. Ring of Fire host Mike Papantonio talks about the new Ayn Rand paradise in the south with investigative journalist Rick Outzen.
The following interview is from the May 5th episode of Ring of Fire on Free Speech TV. The Food and Drug administration is supposed to protect consumers from dangerous drugs and make sure that drug companies are doing the proper tests of their products. But thanks to the revolving door between industry and the government, safety checks have become almost non-existent. Ring of Fire host Mike Papantonio speaks to attorney and consumer advocate Daniel Nigh about how defunct the FDA has become due to their cozy relationship with the pharmaceutical industry.
The way representative democracy is supposed to work is pretty simple: you protect the fundamental rights of the minority [[so it doesn't become two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for dinner), and then the majority of citizens, acting in their own rational self-interest, elect representatives who will pursue the greatest good for the greatest number of citizens. That's the theory, but "rational" is a key word in that formulation. What happens when lots of citizens don't have a solid grasp of what's going on in the real world? Mike Papantonio asks that question of author Joshua Holland.
The Fifteen Biggest Lies about the Economy: And Everything Else the Right Doesn't Want You to Know about Taxes, Jobs, and Corporate America

Mike Papantonio of Ring of Fire talks about this with Mackenzie Thomas, a student at the University of North Carolina and President of the UNC Campus YMCA, who has worked to bring social engagement at her school to new levels.
