In the last few months the assault on labor unions has reached new levels in America with Wisconsin's Governor Scott Walker's actions being just the tip of the iceberg. This assault is not going to end any time soon and is actually going to be picking up steam. So who's behind this push? -- Mike Papantonio talks with Mother Jones investigative journalist Andy Kroll about the players who are pushing the anti-union agenda of the GOP.
For years we've talked about how easy it is to get involved in the political process if you care enough to make the effort. And that's exactly what our next guest has done. Justin Jones has created his own media machine by way of the internet and YouTube that he's using to help beat back the voices on the right. And he's done all of this at the age of 17 and he spoke with Ring of Fire's Mike Papantonio recently about what inspired him to get involved in politics even before he could vote.
Believe it or not there was a brief period in US history when the Republican Party wasn't a puppet for big business and didn't act solely on behalf of their own self-interests. But when this party found itself struggling to continue to exist, they decided to align themselves with big business interests and they became the greedy, corrupt, and incompetent GOP that we know today. Mike Papantonio talks about the metamorphosis of the Republican Party with Brian Kahn, author of the new book "Real Common Sense: Using Our Founding Values to Reclaim Our Nation and Stop the Radical Right from Hijacking America."

Americans are getting screwed at the pumps; Oil companies are raking in record-breaking profits; and the government continues to dish out subsidies to the oil industry. So what is Obama going to do? He's going to increase oil drilling, of course! Mike Papantonio and Ed Schultz discuss the president's disastrous plan to give big oil even more special privileges in America.
Its now been a little over a year since BP's Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded killing 12 men and leaking millions of gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. The oil might have disappeared from the headlines but it certainly hasn't disappeared from the water or from the shores and millions of Gulf Coast residents are still waiting to be made whole from this disaster. But there's still a long battle ahead and that's why its so important to have people like Antonia Juhasz who are fighting everyday to expose the lies and negligence of BP and she spoke with Mike Papantonio recently about her fight as well as her new book "Black Tide: The Devastating Impact of the Gulf Oil Spill."
American consumers are paying astronomical prices for gas today and economists are warning us that this increase in cost could cause the economy to slip back into a recession. The Republicans' plan to solve the crisis is simple -- let's just drill for oil in every available square inch of America. Not only would this destroy our environment and our health, it completely ignores the root of the problem -- it isn't a shortage of oil driving up our prices, it's the actions of oil speculators and brokers on Wall Street. These people drive the price of oil up and reap huge profits as a result. Mike Papantonio talks about how this happens with Lee Fang, an investigative journalist with Think Progress.
The Republicans are not backing down on their brain-dead budget plans which would include completely dismantling the social safety nets of Medicare and Social Security that millions of Americans depend on to survive. And to make things worse they also want to raise taxes on the middle class in order to give even more tax breaks to millionaires. And in spite of the fact that economists have warned us for years that doing any one of these things would kill the small economic gains we've made, President Obama seems to be willing to consider caving in once again to the GOP on this issue. Mike Papantonio talks about why this would be a disaster for our economy with investigative journalist Joshua Holland.
If there's one thing that banks on Wall Street are great at it's finding loopholes in laws. A great example is the fact that some types of brokers and financial advisors can actually put their profits and commission above the best interest of their customers. This means that if they can make a big commission by putting an investor's money in a risky venture they'll do it in a heartbeat -- even if that investor has told them not to do so. But that could all be changing in the next few weeks as new rule proposals could finally close that loophole. Mike Papantonio talks about this with attorney Peter Mougey, who specializes in securities litigation.
When President Obama released his long form birth certificate he was hoping that the issue of his citizenship would finally be put to rest. But he didn't understand the fundamental cause of the Tea Party GOP's hatred -- they don't care where he was born -- they will never accept him as their leader because he doesn't look like them. Mike Papantonio talks about the role that racism plays in the GOP's birther-ism with blogger and author Chauncey DeVega.
This week the GOP was dealt a serious blow when they lost a special election in the state of New York, effectively losing a long-time Republican stronghold. What made the voters in New York's 26th district change their voting habits -- to put it simply, Paul Ryan. Ryan is still pushing his brain dead budget plans that would kill Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security, and the GOP has been forced to follow along with this plan. But the voters in America are turning against Ryan and his plans and Mike Papantonio and Ed Schultz discuss how the GOP dug their own grave on this issue.
The U.S. Department of Justice announced that they would be investigating whether or not John Edwards misused campaign funds to hide his affair. But, as Mike Papantonio asks on The Ed Schultz Show, is this really the best use of their time? We have Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, and people like John Boehner who have committed crimes and the DOJ hasn't batted an eye.
The same way that we have grown to expect the Republicans to ignore and change the science about issues like global climate change, we now have a White House who agrees to ignore the science that shows us that drilling 18,000 feet below the sea is inherently dangerous and can't be done safely. But the White House is even giving the oil thugs an extra gift. He's going to give them a break on the royalties they pay to drill -- that's a royalty along with the $40 billion dollars a year taxpayers give them in subsidies and tax loopholes and exemptions.
As gas prices quickly approach the five-dollar mark in parts of the country, American auto manufacturers are scrambling to get fuel-efficient vehicles out to consumers. These companies have been sitting on hybrid and electric vehicle technology for decades but decided to continue to push gas guzzling SUVs on the American public until the current crisis forced them to re-think their strategy. Had they addressed the problem years ago, they wouldn't have had to beg Congress for bailouts a few years ago when companies like Toyota and Honda were raking in huge profits from their hybrid vehicles. Mike Papantonio talks about how this happened with Seth Fletcher, author of the new book "Bottled Lightning."
Half of Americans from age one to one hundred take at least one prescription drug on a regular basis. 10% of the country is currently taking an antidepressant. Every time we turn on a TV or open a magazine, we're bombarded by advertisements telling us that we need to take their special, magic pill that will make our lives worth living. But what they don't tell us is that these medications can just as easily destroy our lives. Mike Papantonio spoke with attorney Kim Lambert recently about some of the dangerous side effects that we're starting to see from the over-use of antidepressants.
The Republicans have found a way to combat the fact that their views are completely out of touch with reality -- they've decided that they are just going to create their own reality. That's what Tea Party darling Mike Huckabee is doing with his attempts to re-write history and the Teabagger Republicans are giving him their full support.
