The death of Neda Agha-Soltan [[Persian: ندا آقا سلطان - Nedā Āġā Soltān; 1982 June 20, 2009) drew international attention when her shooting, during the 2009 Iranian election protests, was captured on video by bystanders and broadcast over the internet.The video quickly became a rallying point for the reformist opposition. Nedā [[ندا) is also the the Persian word for "voice", "calling" or "divine message," and she has been referred to as the "voice of Iran".

Neda Agha-Soltan studied Islamic philosophy at Azad University, studied singing privately and worked at a travel agency. She was the middle child and only daughter of a middle-class family of three children, whose family resided in a fourth floor apartment on Meshkini Street in the the Tehranpars neighborhood of Tehran. Her father is a civil servant and her mother is a homemaker. She graduated from Islamic Azad University, where she had studied the traditions and values of Islam as well as the philosophies of the world.

Agha-Soltan was an aspiring, underground Persian popular singer and musician, who was studying her craft through private voice and music lessons. She had studied the violin and had an as-yet-undelivered piano on order at the time of her death. She worked for her family's travel agency. Agha-Soltan loved travel, having saved up enough to have gone on package tours with her friends to Dubai, Thailand and Turkey. She had studied Turkish, in hopes that it someday would aid her as a guide for Iranians on foreign tours there. It was in Turkey, two months prior to her death, that she met her fiancé, 37 year old Caspian Makan, who worked as a photojournalist in Tehran.

Those who knew her maintain that Agha-Soltan had not previously been very political she had not supported any particular candidate in the 2009 Iran elections but that anger over the election results prompted her to join the protest. Her voice and music teacher, Hamid Panahi, who was accompanying Agha-Soltan during the protest and can be seen on the video trying to comfort the dying woman, told the media: "She couldn't stand the injustice of it." Panahi went on to state: "All she wanted was the proper vote of the people to be counted. She wanted to show with her presence that, 'I'm here, I also voted, and my vote wasn't counted'. It was a very peaceful act of protest, without any violence."

It took me awhile to appreciate Matthew Filipowicz's Headzup humor but I see now that he does have a gift for uncovering bizarre links most people would miss.

Ring of Fire's Weekly News is my favorite, especially when Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. shares stories that only a Kennedy could tell. He once took his family to visit the King of Burma, if I recall correctly, and recounted the story of how the King magnanimously gave his kingdom to his subjects, making the country a democracy. Priceless.

BizarrObama's Backwards Health Care Strategy

Despite having the support of 72% of the American public, a robust public health care option is looking less and less likely by the day.

Sadly, the main figures who will likely end up blocking the plan are actually not Republicans, but a small handful of Blue Dog conservative Democrats in the Senate.

Given that fact, you'd think that President Obama would be ratcheting up the political pressure on those few obstructionists. Trying to get them to support his plan. But instead, he appears to be setting his sights on a different target. His supporters.

The Washington Post reported that Obama

complained that liberal advocacy groups ought to drop their attacks on Democratic lawmakers and devote their energy to promoting passage of comprehensive legislation.

He then went on to say:

"We shouldn't be focusing resources on each other... We ought to be focused on winning this debate."

Except the problem is, the people that need convincing, are the same people Obama is protecting. We don't have to convince the Republicans in the House or Senate. We don't have to convince the public. The public already wants it. We have to convince these few Conservadem clowns who are in the pocket of the insurance industry.

So, why would Obama use his resources to attack those who are fighting for him? There is, in fact, a perfectly rational explanation. That man is not Barack Obama and this is not our world. Clearly, he is BizarrObama, and we have obviously entered the Bizarro World. Don't believe me? Just take a look at the following press conference.

That has to be it, right? Why else would you attack those who are fighting for you, while giving a free pass to those who are fighting against you?

The only other explanation is that Obama, as a politician, is not willing to take the lead on what was supposed to be one of the signature goals of his administration.

They obviously haven't mastered the bully pulpit yet, which is a shame since Obama is a master communicator. The sad fact is, if Obama is not willing to fight for this, he's probably not going to fight for anything. Which is all the more reason for liberals, progressives, and advocates not to cease our attacks, but make them louder. You want us to stop? Mr. President, we want you to start.
