What's interesting is that the FBI denies their own knowledge of the power of strong encryption. I sincerely doubt the FBI is as ignorant as they claim. Perhaps they suspect that Apple did not use strong encryption?
I suspect there's a brinksmanship game playing out between FBI & Apple. Very interesting.
Ultimately, the bad guys that matter will have been the ones that will have had access to strong crypto long ago.
That cat has already been let out of the bag many, many years ago.
