Correct. And we all reflect in our own way.

This never applied to me or my family. We had four relatives on the force at various levels. If we needed anything other than an ambulance, we called them first. So I'd say "response time was excellent," but that wouldn't be accurate or fair.

My experience with the northeast district is not positive. But let me qualify this. I realize that it is a very large area and suffers from a myriad of problems. My area is not a high priority zone. We generally suffer from non violent B&Es, domestic disputes and incessant prostitution. There are no drugs sold openly and no gang violence, which would require more aggressive enforcement. When my house got broken into while I was at my parents for the 4th of July holiday, we found out who robbed our house from the local hooker. When we I called to ask about filing a police report, the officer told me my house was in Hamtramck. It isn't. I didn't bother, they got less than 100 bucks worth of stuff because I'm poor. Once the methheads found my house was not holding anything interesting, we screwed the fence posts in [[they got into the back yard by popping off pieces of the fence) and added glass block basement windows. Knock on wood, we haven't had a problem since except for someone got into the garage but didn't find anything, lol.

Another time, a stolen car ended up in the garage of the abandoned house behind me. I got the plate and vin number and called the precinct and asked if they wanted the info. They said they did and supposedly took the info. It's been 2 years. The car's still there.

Occasionally in the summer, they do a prostitution sweep, but everyone's back within days, so it makes no difference. The only recourse we have is not the cops, but a disgusting amount of motion sensitive floodlights.

So yeah, I can't think of a time they personally helped me, but we solve our problems ourselves, as do the rest of our neighbors.

Just thinking out loud, but don't cops just about everywhere [[particularly a large city, with crime low or high) tell you that in regards to stolen property, the likelihood of finding it is relatively low? I know even in the small-ish, lowish crime city that I live in that they'll tell you that. I can only imagine in a city with violent crime as high as Detroit, that using valuable resources to find say a DVD player, some jewelry, etc. must be kind of low priority, to put it lightly.

BTW, did anyone see this story from Monday?

Detroit Police Lauded for Risking Lives to Save Man

It's something you'd hope someone would do for you, and it's always good when we actually see this in action.

I have had nothing but bad experiences dealing with the 12th precinct over on 7 mile. My first experience was several years ago. Around 4 in the afternoon I heard a loud banging on the front door and I went to see what it was. A man was banging on the door and I asked him what he wanted. He said he was schizophrenic and had run out of his meds and needed someone to take him to the hospital. Obviously I was not going to open the door let alone take him to the hospital so I called 911 saying there was a mentally ill guy on my porch banging on the door. So 4-6 hours later the cops arrived and asked where the guy was. I was dumbfounded and told them I had no idea because I was certainly not going to invite him in for tea and have him hang around till they showed up.
This year I was working with the Palmer Woods Association security and a neighbor called me to say a vacant home had been broken into nextdoor to him. I went right over and checked it out and then promptly called the 12th precinct saying there was a break in and we needed the police to come out. The person on the phone told me to have the home owner call to which I replied the home was vacant and there was no owner that we knew of. They then said to have the block club call it in to which I said "I am the block club", this conversation went back and forth for several minutes and finally she relented and said she would send someone out. I waited for almost half an hour but I had guests coming for dinner so I had to get back home. The neighbor told me that they showed up roughly 2 hours later and when they saw the broken window they called in a whole bunch of squad cars and went in with guns drawn as if they crooks would honestly still be there after all that time.
Lastly just recently another home was broken into while the home owners were home. They managed to chase off the criminals and promptly called the police to report the break in. The police again showed up 2 hours later and as the home owner phrased it, they came to make sure our bodies were still here.

Might be time to agree to disagree.

What's this thread about again? Oh, right. I was once involved in a rear-end accident, where some idiot who later disappeared [[prusmably, they had no insurance) ran into the van behind me while looking for their friend outside Greektown Casino. Friggin idiot. The police took a long time, but showed up. The report was somewhat incorrect, but it ended up not mattering.

I've had good experiences mostly. Even a 'talking to warning' instead of a ticket for that bad turn... LOL! I try to talk to the officers that work my area to get a bead on what's going on and trends they see and know of. Most of them are friendly. Some are jerks, just like other careers. We get pretty good response in my area [[near New Center)....

    Questions:

Has anybody had a decent experience with calling the Detroit police? If so [[or not), describe.

Has anybody had a decent experience filing a report with the police? If so [[or not), describe.

Has anybody had anything solved or recovered to their satisfaction? If so [[or not), describe.
