    Watching the George Harrison bio on HBO last week, it amused me to see the shots of the British charts in the late 60’s; hot on the heels of the Beatles hits were several Fleetwood Mac songs. Most Americans still believe the band emerged from the Laurel Canyon scene in the mid 70’s.

    Right, sorta like they're the band that guy Welch was in before Stevie Nicks & Lindsey Buckingham farged it up with that wimpy pop-ballad sound.

    Actually-- and I'm sure you already know this-- they had about four studio LP's behind them before they featured any girl-voice, at all; Christine McVie was around [[she drew the cover art for "Kiln House,") but she didn't do any real singing.

    I think Christine played some keyboards on Kiln House and may have sung some background vocals,,but she wasn't an official member of the band. She became a member on 'Future Games' after Spencer left. They were huge in England in the late 60s, but didn't hit it big here til Buckingham/Nicks joined. Most people aren't even aware of their early music. Love the early stuff all the way up until Danny Kirwan left. Peter Green was really looked up to by a lot of the late 60s musicians, but the average music fan over here didn't even know who he was.

    Oh yeah? Cool; thanks. I know nothing of Boston Tea Party, but if you like that early Mac stuff, as do I, I'm probably going to enjoy it.
    I really feel that Fleetwood Mac is a band in [[at least) two acts; as you imply, once Kirwan & Spencer were out of the picture, the truly tasty part was over. The second band is good-- occasionally great-- but I loved that bluesy autumnal sound the first one had.

    Here's the version of Jumping At Shadows from the Tea party album...

    It was recorded on their last tour, shortly before Green left the band. Plenty of copies of Volume I available on Amazon - I can almost guarantee you'll really like it since you're a fan of the Green/Kirwan days.

    Nine bucks for some serious, Elmore James-style blues. Peter Green, hot damn.

    Actually Jeremy Spencer did the vocals and the slide guitar on all their Elmore James stuff. He also sang and played slide on that great version they did of Shake Your Moneyemaker.

    Restoring My Itunes library from a backup hard drive I made a coupla years ago, I found this tune I had copied from a record entitled Riding High: Cole Porter in the 1930's.

    It is by the great Bobby Short and the orchestration is nice and tight. The lyrics are way past your bedtime in so far as the thirties are concerned. Cole Porter is a US National Treasure. It is from the DuBarry was a lady songbook. You can hear 50 seconds of it in the ITunes store to check it out, but the following version is pretty good too;

    Here is a period recording by The Leo Reisman Orchestra, the only full version of the song on the web. I dont know the singer.

    This song was written after John Denver tagged along with Jacques Cousteau on a research mission . John died while flying in his ultralight plane just off the coast in California . Anyone remember when the Calypso came up the Detroit River to investigate the Edmund Fitzgerald ?
