I have heard some bad stories about riding the bus in certain parts of Detroit but that is just anecdotal. Sure, some will automatically have the knee-jerk defense mode of protecting Detroit's image but still. Yes, it can happen in any location, but the chance of being farked with on a Detroit-based mode of transportation will be higher than many other places. That is why I question the safety of a rail line on Woodward. Who would ride it at night or alone during certain times? They would need a full-time security service for the line. If you look a certain way, or act or even dress a certain way.....then you are asking for trouble.
True. I feel sorry for the guy, but file this one under "shit happens". And before someone labels me a Detroit apologist, much worse has happened on the transit system that I ride daily... http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/k...NMeStzFKaAyKOLI feel badly for the victim, but never ride the bus because something bad happened on the bus? Hmm... based on that, more advice:
1. Never drive a car because I once had a bad accident.
2. Never go to the hospital - LOTS of people die in the hospital.
3. Never go inside a house; some houses burn down.
Etc.

Cross-post to "Blame the victim."
Once again, the head in the sand crowd comes forth with their desperate attempts to deny that Detroit just might have a problem with crime.
Wintersmommy, you are a .......
Apparently I was censored. Fill in the blanks, though, with an adjective suitable to someone who calls crime victim's liars because their reality doesn't jibe with someone's fantasy view of the city.
Oooh...he leakin.....bring the ambalance

Be careful on the bus.
I think the 6 guys who attacked Saucy had every intention of attacking someone, anyone. It's obvious the mta subway slasher became "irate" abet with the comment made by the victim that there were plenty of other seats available.True. I have no problems riding the mta system no matter what time of day or night... I don't converse with strangers and don't put any personal belongings on the seat next to me.
If I was attacked because I continually provoked people, then I would say "shit happens"
This is a pretty heavy story and I believe it [[and so does everyone else) Detroit is the most dangerous city in America, It will never get safer until the State or the Feds take it over, If people ever knew all the crime that gets covered up,they would be shocked. But not to worry hate mail in East Detroit, that will never get covered up.
I'll refrain from adding anything substantive, and just wish this guy a speedy recovery...
I attacked NO ONE ...i questioned the truth of what was written by a stranger with no back up....again I attacked NO ONE you are out of line
Furthermore I didnt put blame on the victim....I didnt defend Detroit....I expressed doubt
Probably. So? Does this mean that there now are 6 big bad guys riding every bus in Detroit looking for someone to attack?
Really? That's how you interpreted it? Do you usually go and ask people to move their belongings from a seat in a half empty subway car? It's obvious the mta subway slasher became "irate" abet with the comment made by the victim that there were plenty of other seats available.

Due to the confined nature of any mass transportation sysyem, perhaps some adjustment in the penalties for robbing/beating/murdering on a transportation system should be in order. You can't run away, so maybe a automatic 20 years added to whatever the perp would get? Probably not a deterrent for these types though.
I'm pleasantly surprised that this hysterical clusterfuck of a thread finally produced a post that seems to be motivated by genuine interest in addressing the problem. Here's hoping it continues in this vein, and not in the previous one.Due to the confined nature of any mass transportation sysyem, perhaps some adjustment in the penalties for robbing/beating/murdering on a transportation system should be in order. Wow, this is pretty intense. First of all, I believe the story and sincerely hope the guy will be okay. And I'm reasonably insensitive. But I have to admit that when I first read the initial post, I had to go back over it about four times to see if I was reading it correctly. In all honesty, it almost seems like kind of a stretch that someone could go through all that, have brain surgery that included having a steel plate installed and be able to go online and post information the same day. Seems to me, that's where the doubt came into play. I believe he could possibly do it but it was a bit much to take in. I don't doubt it's all true, but I can see where someone might question parts of the post. Again, I hope the guy's okay. [[It looks pretty bad)
Everyone, cool it, please. People are leaping to conclusions about others' motives.
I'm sure we all wish Saucy [[or Saucey, however you spell it) a speedy and full recovery.
I was attacked on a Detroit bus in 1982. It's a long story, very unpleasant, but thank God I was not seriously hurt. The incident included a guy swinging a board at me which I [[mostly) ducked.
Fellow travelers and driver didn't do anything, except for a woman who said, "umm, umm, umm" in a sympathetic way. I was extremely angry.
I took the DOT bus off and on after that and, even now, I take a SMART bus to and from downtown two or three times a month.
One other point: If anyone is looking to the newspapers, or the local media in general, to corroborate what you've heard about a crime, don't. I work at a local newspaper. Many, many serious crimes, including homicides, go unreported.
If you think it looks bleak now, a daily recitation of the violent horrors in this city would paint a much bleaker picture.
It is reassuring to see that some things never change.
What was that suburban white kid doing on a Detroit bus anyway???? God damned suburbanites are destroying this city.
I'll ride mass transit with my Glock thank you.And yes I would use it.Keep your Mass Transit pipe dreams,I'd rather drive one of our oldest beat-up crap cars than risk getting a beat down for the good of the community or planet.I'm very sorry this person had this happen, and I hope they catch the scum that did this this.I'm just not going on mass transit until this element is dealt with.

I'm thinking a semi-automatic
I didn't mean the victim in this case provoked the attacker by telling this loon there was plenty of other seats around. I'm saying that I don't talk to anyone on the train unless I know them. I've had people sit next to me with plenty of other seats available. If it bothers me I move.Probably. So? Does this mean that there now are 6 big bad guys riding every bus in Detroit looking for someone to attack?
Not necessarily 6 big bad guys....... Maybe 3 or 4 or even 7

Yes and I still feel safe.
To quote Detroit's own Basho Matsuo:
more crime on the bus
this stuff happens everywhere
head in the sand sunt
IHD, honestly, why did you quit if you love it so much?
Wintersmommy comments were perfectly reasonable. When I read the first post I wondered the same thing, how someone who had had major trauma and surgery to the head could be posting about it the next morning. It was a reasonable doubt.
Asking for more information about the event is perfectly reasonable.
It's a terrible event, and we can offer our sympathy to the victim, but we can also remain reasonable and compassionate.
The general argument, given with no details is pretty similiar to this one: "Someone was killed by a burglar in their own home in Detroit, therefore everyone should move to the suburbs".
