Fromm's Hardware

On my brief visit to Detroit's Woodlawn cemetery earlier this month, I stumbled on the grave marker of Eric Fromm, a Danish immigrant to Detroit who founded the hardware chain in 1917. I worked at the Grand River store [[8760 Grand River) during high school and a year at WSU, 1953 - 1955. Great job for a young guy; learned more there than I ever did at Wayne. Here's a couple of photos.....top from about 1952, bottom the current Google view. The chain was sold to Damman Hardware about 1970.

Ray... back in the late 60's/early 70's I taught at Coffey Jr. High with Eric Fromm, who was the son or grandson. Eric taught social studies and never wanted to go into the family hardware business. Did you know him?

Old Eric Fromm had two sons, Jim and Hal. Both have passed away. I believe one of their sons was named Eric, so he would be a grandson of the 'original' Eric.

Ray, I don't know whether your original post was prompted by the recent premier [[Tue 8/13) of the PBS series "Family Pictures USA"--- or it's sheer coincidence that Fromm's is featured in the doc.

The first installment explores the history of Detroit through family pictures and real-life recollections. Good viewing for anyone interested in the history of the city and the uniqueness of its neighborhoods. The link will be good for a month [[9/10). Fromm's is featured at 14:33 for those interested in just that portion.

As an aside, there was an old style hardware store on Woodward in Birmingham near Lincoln, it was run by an old guy and his son. I think the daughter in law my also have worked there from time to time. They had everything you could possible need and would give you fantastic instructions if needed, no extra charge. If you walked in there and you were a dumbass you could expect to get verbally and mentally abused by the old man. Don’t ask me how I know this. It was all in good fun though - at least I think it was.
