The other possibility is that Fr. Robert was taking care of the site and now there is no one to do it

Regarding the AA base at Hielman, I lived on Manning for the first 8 years of my life. I remember my father taking me to an open house at the camp where we were allowed to "touch" the cannon and a demo of the quad fiifties. Hot chocolate and cookies were served in the mess hall. Must have made a positive impression on me because I spent 20 years in the army. When we moved to Haverhill, I would still go to Hielman to use the ice skating rink.

Thanks 5thSFGP. Do you recall what years the AA base was at Heilmann?. Do you remember any of the details as to when the rink was built or when the outdoor pool was built? Did you attend St. Jude School or Burbank?

Where is Haverhill, I don't think I've ever heard that name before? What's a quad fifty?

Haverhill is a sidestreet running between and parallel to Whittier and Berkshire. Wayne elementary school is bounded by Courville on the north, Haverhill on the south, Lakepoint on the east, and Wayburn on the west.

Brock 7, a quad fifty was a gun that had four fifty caliber machine guns. It was used in WWII, Korea and even Vietnam. In Vietnam we mounted the system on the back of a truck - making it a "gun truck" that was generally used as convoy escort.
Kellyroad, seems to me that the rink was built around '56 or '57 and was still in use when I joined the army in '63. I don't recall, however, a swimming pool at Heilman - must have been later on. I went to Burbank elementary but St Jude for mass and religious instruction. My father was one of the founders of St Jude Credit Union back in '60 or so. I attended Wayne [[3d - 6th garde) and St Matthew [[7th and 8th) when we moved to Haverhill. When I made a short visit to Detroit last month I was surprised to find that Burbank and Wayne were still in operation, but St Matt's was no longer open - just the church. As they say - you can't go back.

5th SFGP, You do go back a way!. Heilmann pool must have been built in the very late 50s [[I recall taking swimming lessons there in the summer of 60). It was a L shaped cinder block building with the outdoor pool located on the southwest side of the of the L. The enterance to the pool was right off of Liberal on the Crusade side. The ice rink as you recall was just north of the pool near Manning. In the mid 60s the pool was completely enclosed with a new community center. The pool was tiled. The celings had redwood support beams and there were glass sliding doors that let out to a patio area. Heilmann was the center focus for recreation and leisure activity for most in St. Jude Parish in the late 50s thru the 80s. That whole pool/community center was demolished in 2007. Now there is a new community center with a pool, gym, spa, weight room etc located where the ice rink once stood. There are two schools now on the Heilmann field site. One on the north end [[across from the old Burbank school) and one on the south end, just north of where St. Jude playfield was located. Just as an FYI. SJ school, which later was renamed East Side Catholic was closed in 2008. I'm not sure when St. Matthew School closed. Do you?

Seems to me I learned about in 2002 or 2003. I attended Austin Catholic College Prep for a bit but it's been long closed - or at least that's what I've been told.

The plan is to restart Austin on 23 near Card in Macomb Twp as coed. The property is there, but I think the econony has slowed it up a bit.

Hey all, did everyone get in trouble with Sr. Leonita and have to write, "I will not chew gum in school again" 500 times on the blackboard? Come on, come out and lets do something!

Nope, not me - straight A's in conduct. Though my friend down the street spent a couple of years in military school following his encounter with Leonita.

There was that one kid who got expelled in the third grade ... ~ '66/'67, but I believe Sr. Leonita was gone by then.

The only other person I remember getting expelled was a freshman at NDHS. The kid pulled a knife on Mr. Kelly [[gym teacher / coach) from what I remember. Not too bright if you ask me.

This is a repeat Sr. Leonita story so if you've heard it bear with it. It was scout week in the Feb of 64. I was in my cub scout uniform [[as all the scouts and cub scouts dressed in their unis during that week). Sr. Leonita was doing her PA announcements when all of a sudden she either bumped into the microphone or accidentally hit a button...it made an usual noise..My buddy in the seat next to me started to laugh. Laughter is very infectious...When one tries to suppress laughter, especially at the age of 10, it usually works in the opposite way. Next thing I knew, Sr. Robert Marie yanked me out of my seat and dragged me down to Sr. Leonita's office. She had just finished the announcements. After she found about my laughter [[disrespect) she exclaimed "You're a disgrace to the uniform. Go home and change"..The worst part of this was having to go to Sr. James Marie's room [[She was the assistant principal at that time), knock on the door, walk in and ask for an 8th grade safety patrol boy to walk me home so I could change. Usually I did well in conduct and I'm not sure if that kind of negative reenforcement changed my behavior or was a striking example to others that you'd better shut the %*#@*^ during the PA announcements. I'll take the writing on the black board anytime, especially with that 5 chalk line maker
