Note quite, one block up, between Moross and Casino. The name sounds familiar, but can't say for sure. I suspect he was in the crowd we use to play wiffle ball with. There was a house on a double lot on Lansdowne next to the alley behind Morang. The extra lot was just big enough for wiffle ball. One summer in particular, that was the place to hang out.

    Hello everyone.Got a poll question:
What year did you or your family first establish in St. Jude Parish?
If your family moved within the St. Jude Parish boundaries before St. Jude was established [[July 1941), what parish did they belong to?
Many homes in my neighborhood [[Morang then Eastwood...in the Cherry section) were built just before St. Jude became a parish. I'm assuming those homes belonged to Guardian Angels [[est. 1927) at that time. The homes east of Kelly [[Blue sec.) I'm assuming also belonged to Guardian Angels since St. Brendan was not established till 1954. Those homes west of Hayes must have belonged to Assumption Grotto or maybe GA since St. Raymond wasn't founded until 1941.

My parents moved into the Parish in 1952? Are there any in 1941?

My parents moved to 12468 Laing, [[Blue section) in 1956 from an apartment on Grover and Hazelridge - "caddy corner" from Robinson school - think CFG also grew up in that area for a while. They were members of AG and my sister was baptized there in 1955. The Laing house was built 1946-1948, can't remember what the title abstract said now. Yes, I would think they would have been in Guardian Angels territory. Where exactly was St. Raymond? Can't remember.

My folks move in about 1942 or so. I know my oldest brother and sister were born and baptized elsewhere. I think they lived on Harding near Mack and went to a church on Mack in that area. Might have been St. Catherine on Seminole

St. Raymond Parish was located on Joann [[4 blcks west of Schoenher) between Fairmont and Bringard [[Eastburn does not run that far west). It was St. Jude's neighbor on its northwest boundary [[in the green section). As I recall St. Raymond was St. Jude's primary competitor during the 60s especially in football. Our teams would often play each other in the "Blue Jug"?? game at DeLaSalle's football field on Conner.

    Follow up questions:
Was it actually called the "Blue Jug" game?
Was the Blue Jug an annual trophy played between the two schools on its regularly scheduled game or was it a division championship?

That all sounds familiar, but I will have to let the more knowledgable Jets answer this one!

The Blue Jug game was between St. Ray's and St. Jude every year, like the Little Brown Jug game was between Michigan and Minnesota.
I think that it started as a real jug, but if I remember correctly, it got broken and it became a cardboard jug.

Another mystery to be solved during our 70th anniversary......What happened to the blue jug?

We moved to Eastburn in 1949 from an upper flat on Longview in St. Juliana parish. My folks moved to Saratoga around 1967. Big move up. It's strange to me that they only owned 2 homes their entire lives.

Thanks for passing this along JC. Chatham was started inside the St. Jude boundaries and many of us shopped and/or worked in one of its many stores on the east side.

Chatham was a client of the company I worked for in the 70's & 80's [[along with Great Scott). What a difference in the 2 outfits. Chatham was a class operation.

Laing is right, we were late-comers to the Cherry section - arriving in 1964 - moving from Hazelridge and Chalmers - kindergarden and 1st grade were in Robinson - repeat of 1st grade, then 2nd grade at AG - wth first communion made at AG - also baptized there in 1955.

re: Blue Jug - didn't make it to me out of the trophy case when we had the trophy 'claim month' in the parish lower church, so I'm guessing it was appropriated at some point when the trophy cases were dismantled in the gym.....don't know when that happened, probably an alumni of the last graduating class could help us with that answer.

There was a tropy case one the west side of the gym lobby that displayed many of St. Jude's significant championships including a CYO football title [[?late 50s, early 60s). There was a team picture and a football signed by the Lions...I don't recall if the blue jug was housed in that particular trophy case or not. Does anyone remember if it was?

I doubt if it ended up elsewhere, but will do a check into the nooks and crannies and see if it's anywhere to be found.

I can only imagine what nostalgic treasures there may be hidden in those many nooks and crannies. What a fun afternoon one could have looking!

Actually, our nooks and crannies are limited now to the church, parish center and rectory. In cleaning the rectory last Spring, those nooks are empty - and lower church hall is cleaned and cleared, and the Parish center is in the process of being cleaned and organized. Needless to say,if, in any of those areas, a treasure is unearthed, it will be shared with all!

On a related note CFG:...Are the church records [[Baptismal, marriage, deaths, financial. etc, etc.)kept in the Parish Center? Are they computerized? Are the old records microfiched and/or digitalized? Are copies sent to the AOD? Are there copies of all the St. Jude Calendar bulletins? Are there any St. Jude School records at the Parish Center or are they all at the AOD?

Are there any old photos [[including the original rectory on Kelly and Roscommon and/or Masses at Denby HS) on file?

There are no records in the Parish Center. The building is used for the Food Pantry - and for parish gatherings like meetings, parish dinners and fellowship Sunday when the great crew makes the best donuts on the Eastside!
I know all current church records are kept in the Rectory. I am not sure if ALL of the originals are kept there, or if some are archived at the AOD. Again, I will verify, but I sincerely doubt there are any copies of any st. jude bulletins, as there would be no reason to store those, and really no place to store those - 70 years x12 months x 4 weeks - gads - almost 3300 bulletins! It seems like there should be more..... We have to remember that "back in the day" - historical data wasn't preserved and pictures were probably taken by parishioners and not professional photographers. I've never seen any pictures of - nor new there was a rectory on Kelly and Roscommon! I'll put out a request for any historical pictures on the website and facebook page! thanks for the idea!

A million thanks CFG! One has to wonder where those iconic photos of ground breaking ceremonies, cornerstone laying, blessing of the church, etc. are kept. They had been used in previous anniversary publications, etc. The idea of soliciting photos via facebook or even having parishioners bring in their own photos [[especially from the 40s, 50s. i.e. JC's sister's wedding) to be scanned is a great idea. There's got to be a huge repository of 8mm or super 8 movies out there too. For that matter even betamax or vhs format video from the 70s. It seems there were always a few movie takers with their Bell-Howell cameras perched on a step ladder or on an upper step recording for posterity. I'm wondering how many church picnics at Heilmann, Balduck Park, or even Boblo are on film. My guess is that only a small percentage have been converted to digital format that would make it feasable to upload to the Parish Website, and/or the St. Jude Facebook site, but only a few are needed.

Randy was in my class of 75 at Denby. I hate it that he was in Nashville for all those years and I had no idea. So sorry for his family.
