Why even differentiate beetween male and female, then? Hell, we could just do a count of people, forget about age, etc...and call it a day. lol Seriously, though, information is power; there is a reason the Census used to ask you if you had indoor plumbing.

Their dumbing down of the list has to do with the president not getting his Commerce Secretary in quickly enough, so everything is scaled back. This has not been a secret; his administration is underprepared for this, and mostly because they wanted to be. They obviously don't see the importance of the Census. The bullsh$t about the highly dubious and faulty American Community Survey, which takes too small a sample size to get anything right, taking the place of the long-form, this time around, is just that.

Of course, the whole reason for the existence of the census is simply to find out where people are and how many of them there are in any given place for the purpose of apportioning House seats. Everything else is just an add-on, including questions about race, sex, or indoor plumping.

It matters somewhat to [[large corporate) business entities, and can [[I guess) help them enter new markets.

This census should be interesting, to say the least. While there was probably a noticeable population drop in the suburban/outer areas of the city, and will probably be in the next decade as well [[the full affects of this mortgage and economic crisis may not show up on this one), the trend in the greater downtown area and inner city might be surprising. Much of inner city Detroit has been claiming demographic shifts, new housing units, and even population growth. Income in the inner city will also be interesting to see, but probably will be more interesting when put alongside the 2020 Census.

Something kind of interesting is the amount of families and children that now live Downtown, especially in Midtown and the Central Business District [[CBD). There are a few people like us who just want an urban environment in Michigan [[the best we got) for as long as possible, but there are still others who are taking advantage of the cheap prices or still others who purchased condos as young professionals, and ended up underwater on mortgages. Now, those young professionals are married and ready to have kids, except they are stuck and some are choosing to just start their families in Detroit, working to improve things or hoping the market improves.

It's worth noting that several buildings in Midtown and the CBD now have activity programs or events for families, and several have built full playgrounds/play areas for kids. Obviously, there is something to this if all these properties see reason to invest in such things, we'll see if the census reflects any of this as true, and if future projections show this as a sustainable change in trends.

More importantly, the information is useful for local governments, charities, social organizations, etc...that realize that we do still have parts of the society that need to help catching up. Pretending the disparities don't exist doesn't do anyone any good, that is unless head-in-the-sand ideology is seen as a good thing.

You obviously didn't read the article which interviewed other Arabs who expressed concern over being labled white. Or, you just didn't care to learn that you were wrong.

Speaking of boring, I don't want to hear about your fucking college experiences or where the fuck you would live. Do you think anybody gives a shit about your anecdotal bullshit? Boy this thread sure turned vicious. When I saw the title, I thought it was going to be about how much federal funding Detroit stood to lose with a population drop.

I thought the "Detroit only" laws were modified a few years back to read "a city over 750,000 in population".

I don't care if Arabs are white or not.
Typically cites are slower to lose population during a recessioni People don't want to make the move to suburbs or the country until their own economics are more secure. Of course many have had to leave. My point is when things pick back up more may still be leaving.

If the new census really shows only 4% white that would seem to dampen any enthusiasm for whites to want to move to Detroit not that many whites are considering such a move. I don't think this is racism. I picked a mostly hispanic neighborhood to get a house in El Paso but here in Rockport my neighborhood is all white and GOP. [[390 homes one hispanic + my son) I prefer a nice mix like the ELP neighborhood which is roughly 60% Hispanic 10% Black and 30% white. Honestly I would not feel comfortable in a 94% Black neighborhood just as I'm not happy about still seeing W'04 stickers.

Growing up on the far east side in the forties and fifties, the neighborhoods were even more uniform in composition. Our neighborhood was almost exclusively German. Most of my friends had names like Bernhardt, Salzwadell, Schick, Wetzelberg, Kramer, Gruebner, Steffan, Schmidt, Fleischer, etc. I had one Lebanese friend with the last name of Khouri. My father figured the neighborhood was going downhill when the Schmidts next door moved away and rented their house to some Tennessee hillbillies. We moved to Rochester a couple of years later.

To the tune of "Okie From Muskogee", everbody ...

We don't have no lovin's in El Paso
We don't go to porno picture shows
We don't swap our wives with our neighbors
And we keep our kids away from Mexico.

And I'm proud to be an asshole from El Paso
A place where sweet young virgins are deflowered.
You walk down the street knee-deep in tacos
    Ta-ta-ta-tacos
And the wetbacks still get twenty cents an hour.

We don't wipe our asses on Old Glory,
God and Lone Star beer are things we trust.
We keep our women virgins till they're married
So hosin' sheep is good enough for us.

And I'm proud to be an asshole from El Paso
A place where sweet young virgins are deflowered.
You walk down the street knee-deep in tacos

The problem is if they fall below 750k then they lose the ability to apply the non-Detroit resident income tax. This will devastate the city since this is a major source of their tax income to run and operate the city.

Kinky Freedman came in last when he ran for Governor. El Paso is a liberal Democratic City, where I am now is much further to the right except on environment because we have eco-tourism and wildlife refuges etc

Good numbers on suburbs - but was the estimate of only 4% white in Detroit accurate?

I don't know where the fuck you've been but 95% of this site is anecdotal. That is what makes it great because you can hear interesting stories from allw alks of life. Plus, my mother's side is all from Lebanon and they all have no issue with being seen as "white" at all.

Where are you getting that number from? Why don't you try using the American FactFinder at the Census website to see the most recent estimates and other demographics? It literally takes a few minutes.

BTW, word to the wise for future reference: ignore Danny.

yeah I quoted Danny after not seeing any argument with his number. Remember he was only offering his estimate of what the 2010 Census would reveal.

I'm still waiting for the rollback to start again. Remember when Kwame temporarilly froze this with the governor's approval? Remember how the rollback was tied to getting the casinos?

The city needs to get its taxes more in line with its competition.
