It is a MONOPOLY, SOCIALIST, GOVERNMENT business venture in which the State guarantees itself half the money for running the game. It used to be called 'vice' before the numbers racket became a government enterprise. As you mentioned, the government also takes its cut from the FREE MARKET, CAPITALISTIC, CORPORATE, business ventures.

As far as I'm concerned, gambling is a state matter. If a state's voters want to get rid of casinos and lotteries, they can do so.
Oladub, if you could be a little more concise in making your point, I might agree with you on some or all of it, I think?

ok, I was responding to your post #69. You had pointed out that gambling casinos were capitalistic. I agreed and added that state lottos were socialistic. I don't see where one is better or worse than the other. In either case, state voters have the final say of whether or not to ban gambling through their elected representatives or initiatives.

Agreed Oladub. I was being serious and sarcastic when I said casinos were capitalistic. I don't see casinos as being any better than lottos, either. They're both bad. And yes, voters do have the final say. I just can't figure out how anyone, anywhere considers casinos to be the answer to our problems. They're just going to prolifertae to the point where there will be one on every corner. That'll just dilute whatever source of income they may provide. The only good that proliferation has done is spreading lotto income to small businesses such as bars and party stores.

In Vegas, even back in the 70's, you could go to neighborhood bars and they had gambling machines and slots. The wealth was spread around. I'm not advocating for gambling, but if it's going to be legal, the wealth should be distributed. I also think that if gambling was considered to be so bad but has now become a major, legal industry, why not legalize weed? Marijuana would have to be a huge source of income through legalization, taxation and regulation.

I can remember, somewhere out on E. Warren, a Knights of Columbus place that had fish frys on Friday night and bingo on another night. Bingo players might win or lose $5-20 after a night of Bingo. The KofK would raise a little money. It was something to do that didn't average much more than going out to the movie. I think the government eventually shut down such bingo operations. It is ironic that fifteen years later, the State was advertising its lotto games on TV.

There is already health care everywhere. Well maybe not in democrat run new orleans,
BTW, what is Obama doing about New Orleans now?
Barack Obama visited the city for four hours on his way to a fundraiser in San Francisco. A person in the audience at a New Orleans town hall meeting asked the president for help in securing funds for the remaining hospital so that it could handle all situations. His reply that he could not write a check to pay for expanded services to the city might be technically correct. However, there are many things the president could do to enable the hospital and its staff to provide a full panoply of services.
    Obama's campaingn promise # 358
"Will rebuild broken facilities and provide incentives, such as loan forgiveness, to lure medical professionals back to the region. They will fight to establish a major medical complex in downtown New Orleans that will serve the entire community. They will also push to quickly build a new, state-of-the-art Department of Veterans Affairs hospital in New Orleans so that the city's veterans can get top-quality care."

    They are still waiting.....................

New Orleans should be abandoned and return to swampland. It's the only affordable option.
How stupid is it to build a city below sea level right next to a river?

Oh, thank you Great Sage. I will treasure this moment forever. I'd write more, but my tears of gratitude are obscuring my sight.

There is something to be said for going out at the top of your game.
