Interesting. Not so much here but crime can be a factor against walking.

A few blocks can be dangerous. Everyone is not fit for walking long distances due to surgeries and or age. I tend to reserve most of my walking for work, the gym and my peddling [indoor or out].

yes, but we're talking here about the average person who complains about parking costs. If they walked a few blocks the lots close to the stadium would be half empty and the price would drop for those who can't walk.

I'm a fan of architecture as much as the next person, probably a lot more so actually, but I don't see anything wrong with sleek all glass towers. There is nothing else like them in downtown currently and I love the variety they'll add to the skyline.

It's possible to actually do interesting architecture. With a prominent position on the river, it would have been nice to have something with a little imagination instead of something that would look right at home in Troy or Southfield.

I think that all glass architecture or glass, steel, and concrete would be perfect on the riverfront. However, if I had my way I would rather that the riverfront be unmolested with highrises and be developed as a scenic drive. There are points along Jefferson that you could see the river

You do know it's possible to get out of your car and walk right?

The riverwalk is several miles long of uninterrupted walking paths.

Don't have a Crain's sub. but both the cost of the hotel and the amount of tax credits sound high for this project.

Indianapolis somehow does a much better job at selling itself as a convention and entertainment/sports midwest mecca. I was there a few weeks ago for a concert and besides hotel numbers don't see why it is whipping Detroit's ass in this department. Very few storefronts, limited restaurants, limited museums, and just a lot of older buildings empty. If Detroit could figure out how to get more hotel development it could steal all this business from Indianapolis. This hotel is a nice start, but we need to see 3-6 more of these around Huntington Place and the arena district. That is why we haven't gotten an allstar game [[both NHL and NBA) and why Indianapolis keeps all the Big 10 championship games.

I'm kind of shocked this is the first new hotel construction downtown in at least a decade. We're constantly hearing how demand for rooms is high and supply is low, but so far we've mostly seen small boutique-style renovations. The hotel next to LCA should have been completed alongside the arena but it's still an empty lot.

The huge parking lot on Randolph next to the old county hall would be perfect for a new hotel tower.

I remember hearing about that one Sports Illustrated Hotel that was planned for ann arbor but got denied by the city council vote saying Detroit was a possible location for it as well, that would be a home run addition here if they could somehow get that moved. It makes way way more sense in Detroit anyways

Hard to say if Authentic Brands, which owns SI, will continue with the hotel branding after SI's financial problems. Not sure the brand has as much cache now anyway.
