Many of the smaller braid, natural hair shops, barbers, salons and nail shops already rent or own store-front properties across the city that might otherwise sit empty - abandoned. And they are hopefully paying business taxes rather you prefer their offerings or not.

Re. 'Urbane', one mans urbane is another needs, goods and services. If not rowdy, illicit, or crime engaged I am fairly ok with them. I'd have to know what you mean about 'urbane'.
Some of the storefronts sit empty because of overhead while some t shirt shops are probably given a break . I am not anti urbane or small shops. There are people who shop at them. I believe that there should be a balance. As far as Sheffield is concerned; she could be a great proponent for the long time residents not being taxed out of their homes and to fight against gentrification and for the needs of Detroiters. Stay out of big business and corporate affairs if she is going to be bias

Looks like the temporary closure of the Five Guys in the Greektown Casino has become permanent.

I didn't know they had closed. If a popular low priced fast food chain on that intersection can't make it I'm not sure what can.

I'm not sure how often you eat there, but nothing is "low priced" about Five Guys.

I haven't eaten there in a few years since I don't eat that stuff any more but it was cheap compared to the Five Guys here in Canada. We usually pay an extra couple of dollars for fast food here but the Canadian Five Guys was almost double the price so I considered "relatively" cheap in the U.S.

As soon as the new City Council were in place there had been store closings downtown. Seems odd

I hear that. I am always curious that the expensive T-shirt places make a go of it as long as they do. Especially when the inventory does not change enough. How many T-shirts can one wear? Even Zuckerburg has to ditch his when heading into court or other official business settings!

Yeah I got the sticker shock when eating there once. I don't often think 'I could have cooked this at home...' when dining out -- but goodness!

Apparently most of you have not gone out to eat since the 60's based on your posts. Lol. Cost of eating out has gone up exponentially in the last 10 years, let alone this latest inflationary situation. Fast/quick service food is not immune. This is the way of the world now unfortunately. If you're getting "sticker shock" you are naive.

^ Opinions vary [including as to restaurants re. what they are selling], and woe to the person that measures bite-to-bite relative to home cooking pricing/ value, but some pricing is just ridiculous.

This is only going increase so at least get good food, including good ole' french fries - not served cold and cooked in old oil!

That’s the truth, eating out is noticeably more expensive, including fast food. The last time I had a Big Mac it was 6.00 - That’s a lot of money for a crappy hamburger. Their coffee actually isn’t too bad though.

The casino seems dead set on closing every business on their side of Monroe. Cold Stone and Pegasus I think are the only two left on the south side of the street.

Like most casinos they only seem concerned with what goes on inside their walls. As long as people have easy access to a parking garage and a tunnel to get on the gambling floor everything is fine.

Are these t shirt shops given special treatment so that they could stay open in these storefronts along Woodward and other areas whole named brand shops the rent increase dramatically in order to force them out?

This all purely speculation, but Apple Store in Downtown Detroit.

This was through reddit [[not a reliable source of course):
    1/24:
“Apple store announcement coming very soon btw. Heard it from an insider.”

    2/21:
“Was wondering if there was any update on this?”

“Nothing yet but it’s supposedly going to be right near the Shinola hotel.”

From a Daily Detroit podcast on 3/25:
“The question has been asked for years now.”

“Is if and when Detroit will be ready for an Apple store. And what I’m hearing is that the answer is yes and soon.”

“We saw this sort of exit of the Madewell store on Woodward there and what I’m hearing is that is possibly going to be an Apple store.”

Again they say that this is speculation. Previously Daily Detroit had some inside sources saying that Gucci store was coming to Downtown Detroit [[this was maybe a couple days before Crain’s Detroit reported on this, but couldn’t go into details about it). This time around this is more speculation.

I just can't see any store like Apple until the office market returns and settles in for a year. Even when workers fully return it's going to be a hybrid model so retailers need to see how many workers will be downtown on a regular basis.

I could see an Apple store in Downtown Detroit especially in the near future even if refurbished laptops, IPads and IPhone are only sold there it would do great on that strip in one of the empty storefronts. Techies from Detroit and beyond need to apply. Some people who are knowledgeable of computers or willing to learn will be great employees. No one believed that Nikewas going to do good downtown but they are. Gilbert will definitely need to beef up security around downtown if Apple comes downtown. I am surprised that Microsoft hasn't opened a store in the Compuware building being that they have an office there. I wouldn't be surprised if Apple open a store inside the vacant room on the ground level of 1001 Woodward or the former 1st National Bank building. Apple already have a school inside that building and security in the lobby where any shoplifters will have to go through the trouble of going into the lobby past security in order to escape

I'm going to make a predication and say Apple will open a retail location in Downtown Detroit within the next 3 years.

I will go even further than that and say it will almost certainly have a Woodward Ave address and quite possibly open within the new Hudson's block in 2024. That, or as others have said, 1001 Woodward would make an excellent location.

Wherever Apple ends up, it's sure to be an iconic location and will draw huge amounts of customers.

I don't know but if they are waiting for me to purchase regularly they're in trouble for certain.

Yes , I see it integrated with the Hudson block since the Apple Stores usually have a huge window that would fit in well with the lobby portion of a huge building.

Looks like we have something coming for 1300 Broadway called Peach Cobbler Factory. Seems like Downtown Detroit has been getting a lot of sweets lately. Do wish them luck since that area is pretty rough considering most [[if not not all) of the south side of Broadway is vacant.

Yeah, on reddit Detroit, they were saying Madewell was forced out of their spot by Bedrock, and that the store was actually doing good business. I asked why would Bedrock force out a retail business doing good, and the response was, "For another tenant they want in that space."

I guess this is why Detroit Is The New Black left as well, they need to combine the two stores for Apple?

IDK I'd be surprised. Feel like an Apple store debut is best for the Hudson site.

Bedrock, desperately trying to fill their empty retail space, decides it would be best to kick out one of their few viable ones, without another place to move to. Yeah, that makes sense.
