I am supposed to fly in to Detroit on April 8 to attend a 4 day conference of about 2,000 participants at the downtown Marriott. So far it has not been cancelled. I am debating whether or not I will attend even if it's not cancelled. I was so looking forward to going to Detroit as I have not been back in three years.

The fact that they are not closed shows that money trumps alot. Heck the games may be hitting good this weekend!

Just wear your blue nitrile gloves for protection and try not to inhale too deeply one could argue......

The casinos managed to get exemptions to the non-smoking laws, so I wouldn't be surprised at all if they are allowed to continue operating. Whitmer might have to step up and simply force them to close. I don't think that decision can be left to the money grubbers that own the casinos. They have no issues with putting their bottom line before the well being of their customers, it's basically their business model even in good times.

Oh one more thing. Let's not forget that you know who, fired the pandemic team in 2018....https://fortune.com/2020/02/26/coron...cuts-us-trump/

The Trump administration recently requested $2.5 billion in emergency funds to prepare the U.S. for a possible widespread outbreak of coronavirus. Critics, though, are pointing out that money might not be necessary if the administration hadn’t spent the past two years largely dismantling government units that were designed to protect against pandemics.
The cuts started in 2018, as the White House focused on eliminating funding to Obama-era disease security programs. In March of that year, Rear Adm. Timothy Ziemer, whose job it was to lead the U.S. response in the event of a pandemic, abruptly left the administration and his global health security team was disbanded.

I think the governor banned large gatherings.

Because they haven't been testing. Ohio's health director said there might already be 100,000 infections in that state:

Incredible. There must be many more infections out there, then what's reported and confirmed but that's a really high number and very fascinating. It would make it hard to believe leaders did not know or the health system did not know earlier than all these steps were taken.

Not sure if all these infections make me feel better or worse.

Probably in about a year or so, like all other vaccines that have to be created from scratch.

It will take a minimum of 6 months to manufacture and distribute a vaccine after invention and trials. Then it's just a matter of how much the Chinese are charging.

You won't find me in any movie theaters anytime soon, but to be honest the last movie I saw in the theaters was either Any Given Sunday or maybe Twister, so it's been 'a while'. LOL.

At least in a movie theater there are steps that can be taken to disinfect surfaces between showings, and you can normally distance yourself from other patrons. In a casino people move from machine to machine, and table to table. They all touch the same buttons, chips and other surfaces and handle drinks and many of them cigarettes as well. As someone else mentioned there's also the age of the average gambler, it's basically a sea of senior citizens in these places on most days. Exactly the population that needs to be most protected from this virus.

That's far enough out that we should know the extent of the infection rates by then. If the numbers stay low, or ramp up quick then fall quick, everything should clear up by then. If rates are steadily increasing week after week, then you cancel.

Why not begin a program on a similar scale as the Manhattan Project and get it done sooner?

It's a shameful national failure our country does not have the ability to do more testing, and disgusting that our president would rather not anyway in order to keep the official numbers artificially low.

    I do NOT feel better.

Many of my dearest loved ones are in the highest risk categories.

We are all paying the price and he had better too.

I think nuclear weapons is taking it a bit far, but if you think that's what we need....

Ohio has been out front over the past week+ on this, at least as far as being honest about what they don't know and the likely magnitude of the problem. As well as in taking pro-active action sooner and more profoundly than a lot of other jurisdictions, although Whitmer isn't doing too badly now.

You should read the story of the Seattle flu study and how the doctor who ran it fought to test their samples taken back in January for coronavirus, and finally defied the federal government in February and ran some of the tests and found out it was already active and spreading there despite what folks in the federal government were saying. Only to have her evidence and advice largely disregarded and her permission to test further quashed. It shows how shamefully inadequate and misguided our whole response to this threat has been.

The way the patient who is at the center of the biggest outbreak in New York was treated when he went to the hospital is also evidence of this scandalous official disregard for the seriousness of the situation:

Because it involves animal and human testing, and those take time. You can't speed them up by adding more test subjects.

There are already federal and private labs working on this, across multiple governments and nations. They are already set up to work on stuff like this. Leave them alone and let them do their jobs.

Our public schools and daycares in SE WI have instituted "medium length" closure until April 13.

This time encompasses spring break and allows a 14-day, post spring break travel quarantine [[as per CDC) for who may have traveled.

If things get worse it may extended. Let's hope the cure doe not kill the patient here... no wonder people are getting into hoarding and rushing the stores. Minute to minute there seems to be less one is allowed to do.
