Default Man jumps from Greektown Casino garage, dies

This was in today's Detroit Free Press...

A man commited suicide Thursday by jumping from the parking garage of the Greektown Casion, Detroit police said.
A city parking attendant discovered the body at 8:20 a.m., between two cars parked along Macomb Street, police spokesman John Roach said.
"He made a cell phone call to the West Bloomfied Police Department, indicating he was going to commit suicide off the Greektown Casino Garage," Roch said. "A short time later, that's when the meter maid made the discovery."
The man's identity was not released pending notifications of his family.

Interesting to hear if this phone all was followed up upon. I wonder if the call was taped.

Apparently Greektown was finished with him anyways.

Ummm, did the West Bloomfield police think to call the DPD about this? If so, did they show up? Perhaps a call to casino's security people?

    Sad story.

I'm wondering the same thing as you guys. Wouldn't surprise me if they did notify the DPD and they didn't take action quick enough

Do you think he stood around waiting for the police to show up and stop him? Even if W. Bloomfield called the DPD, he was probably already on the ground by the time they hung up.

Who said that the Police didn't follow up on it? How could they have reacted fast enough, the guy leapt shortly thereafter to his death. This isn't some cartoon where the firemen show up with one of those big "jumper trampoline" things in 2 seconds.

Does Greektown have security cameras up there? I know when I used to shoot photos from MGM's old deck there were usually a couple of security people up there pretty quickly to check on anyone hanging around the edges of the structure.

If I owned a casino, I'd have barbed wire fencing around all potential jumping sites. I wouldn't be able to sleep at night knowing I've profited off the gullibility of the statistically challenged.

As I tell people who think they are going to win at gambling: "Casinos aren't built because the gamblers are winning."

Wasn't there another suicide jumper at Greektown less than a month ago?

Didn't we just go through this a few weeks ago?

Yes, and I wouldn't be surprised if jumpers are quite regular at all of the casinos.

DPD has a lot of calls and not enough officers. If someone wants to kill himself and not intending to hurt anyone [[hoping he doesn't land on someone) then I would prefer DPD assist victims, stop criminal activity and track down criminals. I may be a cold hearted SOB but I would rather DPD spend their time protectibg citizens from criminals, not protectibg citizens from themselves.

If I was contemplating suicide it sure as hell wouldn't be jumping off a roof.
Pills or gun would be my choice, or maybe be a suicide bomber on KK's front porch. [[just a thought)

    That's the governments job.

Iknew this "man.". We went to school together for years in WB. Truly a tragedy. He was a nice kid, never would have thought this.

Jumpers/suicides are a regular occurrence in the casino biz. Expect one every month or two, folks. Comes with the territory. This is what we signed up for when we authorized casinos.

My sympathies cmubryan. Something like that must be hard to bear for friends and family.

If that's the case, where are the 180 or so who've jumped over the last 10 years that the 3 casinos have been open?

    Rarely publicized.

You're going to have between four and eight jumpers every year, maybe more, taking all three casinos into account.

As noted, the casinos don't want these incidents publicized.

In defense of the Detroit police, a friend had his car stolen last night -- it was an older model, easy-peasy to get into, over by Channel 4 -- and although I wouldn't figure this to be high priority, car theft being so common, the officers arrived about a half hour later. Extremely competent...

Re casinos, heard yesterday about a West Bloomfield man who lost $400,000 at the Motor City Casino and is suing under some arcane law, that you can sue if you lose in a legal or illegal "gaming" scheme. The idea of risking and losing that much money is just so alien to me...

They don't advertise it. People jump off the Ambassador more than you would realize as well. We were crossing one day and there was a Neon pulled over sideways and a bunch of officers and customs idiots looking over the railing. My friends dad said she landed right by the cemetery next to the University of Windsor.

There could be several theories why this man commites suicide at the Greektown CaSINo:

    1. He could lost his job and could pay his bills so he hit the CaSINo to get his luck change, but he lost of all.

    2. He could just committed suicide if he has psychological disorders and try to take medicines to supress is problem, but he probably forget to take it, went looney and commit his death.
