One afternoon in the fall of 1971, I ran into the composer John Cage in the DIA. We had coffee in Kresge Court and talked for half an hour. Henrietta Epstein joined us. His nature was kindly and unassuming.

Cage told us that for a period during his schoolboy days, his family lived in Highland Park where his father was an inventor or stage performer [[I can't recall which -- but I think his dad did some of both.)

That evening I managed to slip past the gendarmes to watch Merce Cunningham and Cage performing in the lower level of the DIA's north wing.

Dax graduated from Walled Lake Central, as did Doug Corella, drummer for pop band The Verve Pipe.

Elvin Jones, jazz drummer, was born and lived in Pontiac until 1955. He ended up playing with some guy named John Coltrane. Hayes Jones won a gold medal in the 1964 Summer Olympics. Said medal is on display at the Pontiac city hall. Boxer Pinklon Thomas is from Pontiac and has a street named after him.

    H.M. Wynant....perhaps not a well-known name, but certainly a familiar face!

Came across him in tonight's Perry Mason episode [[The Case of the Singing Skirt) and see that he was born in Detroit in 1927 and attended Wayne State for 2 years before leaving for the footlights of Broadway...and then into movies and television. He made appearances in all the popular television shows of the day from the 1950s through the 1990s and beyond. His three sons--William Winant, Bruce Winant, and Scott Winant--are all in show business.

Did Wally Cox co-star with Darren McGavin in The Night Strangler tele-movie set in Seattle? Is it the same guy?

Oh, and there'd be a lot of famous sports people from Detroit, not just entertainers and musicians.

Never knew of this singer before hearing her tonight in the "Captive Audience" episode of The Alfred Hitchcock Hour from 1962.

    Barbara Dane

Barbara Dane's parents arrived in Detroit from Arkansas in the 1920s. Out of high school, Dane began to sing regularly at demonstrations for racial equality and economic justice. While still in her teens, she sat in with bands around town and won the interest of local music promoters. She got an offer to tour with Alvino Rey's band, but she turned it down in favor of singing at factory gates and in union halls.
She appears beginning at 12:37 to 15:48

Also in that episode is Don Matheson, playing the younger cop. He was from Dearborn and was a Detroit cop before he got into acting.
