Default Detroit taxpayers are footing the bill for bernard kilpatrick's attorney

Am I reading this correctly? Why would the taxpayers be obligated to pay for his lawyer?

Another example of how thug KK and his family are STILL raping and pillaging the people.

They all get free lawyers, from Monica to KK to everyone else in this scandal. His buddy Ferguson will probably get one too. Apparently you dont have to prove any income limitations to cry broke and get a free lawyer. That's a process that needs to seriously be revamped.

The sixth amendment of the US Constitution guarantees the right of legal representation, regardless of the defendants ability to pay for it.

As a side note, Detroit taxpayers will not be funding his legal defense alone, as this is a federal trial, and any public support of his legal fees will be borne by the federal government, and thus all people who pay taxes to the federal government.

Further, they probably feel fully 'entitled' to have free lawyers.... After all they are being rail-roaded in their thinking.

..I wish the trial could get underway by the end of the year. fall of 2012 will drag this through the local media interminably...

    Well consider two things:

-If we don't provide a tax payer funded representation to B Kilpatrick, then he'll appeal and win on constitutional grounds and we'll have another trial all over again. So let's have the tax payers pay for the best legal representation he can get on the public dime so that when he gets convicted there's one less thing to possibly be appealed and he stays in jail as long as possible.

-The attorneys are working for $100 an hour. That's unheard of for any attorney, let alone a criminal defense attorney working a federal racketeering trial. Attorneys doing this type of work would usually charge $500+ an hour. The tax payers are getting a very good deal to put a crook behind bars.
