Not only will they miss the deadline for the Eddystone, but the developer and Jackson are out on the projects.
    glad to see some
journalism holding these slum lords accountable. Let’s get public pressure on them and I hope the council follows through punishing them

I wonder if emu steve's reconsidering a comeback in September?

I would ask him a few questions about the need for a Texas Doughnut to which he referred in one of his last posts. I wonder did he actually read the article attached to his post. There was little in it that lauded the effort.

Massive Parking Porn has been a feature of Detroit Metro for years, sometimes touted as a catalyst for Urban renaissance. The aptly named Phoenix Center in downtown Pontiac has drained city finances, is in need of important overhaul, and its future is always uncertain in spite of the office towers that seen like an afterthought in a sea of concrete.

What? The Illitches are not following through on their promises and commitments?!?!? I’m stunned beyond belief.

Curbed Detroit had a nice piece on the lack of development in The District. This is the kind of reporting that will old Olympia accountable.

And that article doesn’t mention every failed promise on their end. It fails to mention that the apartments-turned-office sections of the two garages on Henry have remained in their current unfinished state over a year, or that the parking garage [[Temple West) next to the Alden Apartments was supposed to have a residential component as well that remains incomplete while the garage is open.

It also doesn’t mention the United Artists Building renovation or the planned redevelopment of the former Detroit Creamery Building at 1922 Cass. It also fails to mention the announced hotel on Woodward at Henry, the announced hotel to replace the Hockeytown Cafe, all the announced high rises and mid rises around Comerica Park, and they make it sound like Olympia built WSU’s Mike Ilitch School of Business. The School of Business was entirely built by WSU with money donated by Mike Ilitch/Olympia.

Perhaps mentioning how Ilitch bought the previously occupied two story building on Woodward at Charlotte, had it vacated and cut the power just to let it rot for months would be worthy of this story as well. That place has been sitting empty since the protests outside of it last winter. I’m sure we can all assume what Olympia’s plans were for the site.

I’m glad to see the media begin to publically chastise them for their direct abuse to the city of Detroit, but if you’re going to hold them accountable, you might as well hold them accountable for everything.

A kick in the wallet is the only language they will understand.

It is time to consider an ‘unattached surface parking tax’.

Next up would be the long overdue ‘Michigan blight prevention tax’ for all unoccupied buildings that do not meet codes. How Lansing has let absent property owners do what they can still do after where this state has been and is at currently with issues of blighted buildings is really difficult to understand.

Lansing legislators are as dumb as doorknobs to let cheap real estate go to absolute blighted shit while still protecting the property owners that do it then pour Billions of dollars at the schools, more Billions at the crime/imprisonment problems and then even more Billions helping families that live in poverty with all that entails. The waste of taxpayer funds is mindless just to protect the so called ‘businessmen’ speculators. Lansing lets real estate be treated like penny stocks here where if one hits it will pay for the twenty that lose. Even the Chinese wanted in on the action, Sheer stupidity.

None of the property issues in this state are rocket science that can’t be solved. There are just idiots in charge that could care less who gets hurt and what the price is to most of us while enriching their friends and donors.

Great post and great ideas for some common sense ways to start holding slumlords and parking lot emperors responsible for the damage they inflict on the city.

Interesting that there are Olympia Development of Michigan orange cones blocking public parking spaces on Cass between Temple and Peterboro. I guess blocking public parking to divert people to your parking lots is their new money making opportunity.

They did the same thing a few times months ago to Harry's on Henry at Clifford, using barricades to block the entrance to the bar.
