Actually no, that has nothing to do with what I wrote.

Detroit is the most dangerous city anywhere in the developed world. It is most definitely not the same as Copenhagen or Vancouver or Kyoto or San Diego.

It's quite prudent to exercise caution when you're in the most dangerous major city anywhere, while obviously not going overboard and denying yourself good times. Stuff can happen, and if it happens, you can't rely on a police response. Reasonable caution is warranted at times.

Bham, stay in the suburbs where you think your safe. Detroit is not the most dangerous city in the developed world. Where do you get your knowledge from? Fox News?

Statistically speaking... Detroit isn't even the most dangerous city in Michigan.

Nope, I get my info from the FBI Uniform Crime Report, which ranks Detroit with the worst violent crime rate in the U.S.

What major city in the developed world is more dangerous?

Given that there are no other major cities in Michigan, Detroit is both the safest and most dangerous major city in Michigan. Not sure what this has to do with anything.

First statement is incorrect: Detroit is the most dangerous city anywhere in the developed world

Second statement is incorrect: I get my info from the FBI Uniform Crime Report, which ranks Detroit with the worst violent crime rate in the U.S.

Third statement: now you add 'major city'

    Move your goalposts much?

Also, you cite the UCR numbers. Please represent your analysis of the UCR data. You also cite your source but not the actual numbers which clearly means you make shit up, cite a source but won't actually present data to back up your statement.

I was curious about this, so I downloaded the data from the FBI, and it's easy to crunch the numbers. Here are the 20 US cities with a population over 100,000 ranked by rate of violent crime per 1000 inhabitants, for 2014 and 2013:

In most cases population numbers were not available for 2014 so in those cases I used the population for 2013 instead.

I've gotta run now, but if anyone's interested I can run reports on other types of crimes.

P.S: It's cool we can post tables here!

I said nothing about major cities. Statistically speaking, Detroit is not the most dangerous city in Michigan. And if it ever was it probably hasn't been for a very long time.

I always find myself reading this thread so interesting,, I got back from my frequent ride/run/walk along the Cut, I live next door to it.. To accuse this area of being a crime haven, as some of our posters , who generally don't live anywhere near here.. is always laughable, Is Detroit dangerous at times? ofcourse parts of it is.. Is all of it all the time? No,,. youd be crazy to think that always.. Maybe Im just a lucky guy, but been downtown 23 years and not one incident yet and I am out all over daily, sometimes nightly, by foot. You have to use some common sense where and when you go to some areas and places,, But that is not rocket science, that goes for many, many places in our world. The Cut is a fabulous place, and about to get even better, unlike anything else anywhere in Metro.. Just met some kids from Royal Oak on it.. they said to me they love it and come down here often, wished they could"afford" to live downtown,, Now I'm not too sure I like that comment.. There should be room for everyone, as best as we can enable it.. but to get my point across,, Please stop trashing us all the time, our life here is really quite nice. We do not run around scared to death when we step out, there are tons of regular people of all types here,, and its growing monthly.and there is constantly tons of things to do, , sports, restaurants,, incomparable in metro cultural institutions, athletic facilities,, great markets , and a incredible riverfront. Hey was in Birmingham last Friday night,, very nice very affluent, but just not for me, far to much of everyone being a certain image type,, to each his/her own. You have to live where you are happiest.

/\ Very nicely put,I guess one needs to take everything one says with a grain of salt, but it does seem at times there are some that no matter how positive the city is they will be standing there with a hammer trying to pound it back into the ground.

But it is also good to hear it all,the good, bad and the ugly as long as somebody is willing to counter the bad and ugly in order to get a fair perspective.

Iheartthed makes a good point. The FBI only published statistics for cities with a population of 100,000 or more, and counts only two in Michigan: Detroit and Grand Rapids. It's definitely possible some smaller Michigan cities have a higher rate of per capita crime. It's just not available from the FBI data I found.

And per capita data is only one way of looking at crime. If you calculate violent crime per square mile within the city, the rankings totally change. The FBI does not provide land area in their data, so I had to manually retrieve this information myself. I took the time to do that for the 20 cities with the highest rates of per capita crime [[source: wikipedia). Unsurprisingly, Detroit shifts down the list. If I had done that for all cities, not just the 20 with the worst per capita crime, I'm pretty sure it would drop lower.

I'll paste this data for your perusal in my next posts.

As to Bham1982's question what other cities in the developed world are more dangerous, it's of course a subjective determination what constitutes a developed city. I think it would be difficult to argue cities like Sao Paulo, Rio, and others in South America still don't count as "developed". And if they do, the easy answer is it's considerably more dangerous in those cities, and others there.

Finally, in no way do I intend to disparage Detroit with this data. And I am not scared to walk the Dequindre Cut. I know dangers vary. There are parts of the city where I'd be happy to live. But I think everyone here knows Detroit has a violent crime problem, and the data illustrate it. In reality, any violent crime is too much. Every major American city has this problem to address. I don't have to tell you: the U.S. is a much more violent country than most in the "developed" world.

That said, I'm with those who think it's unfortunate some people jumped to conclusions when the news of the body broke. And worse than unfortunate if anyone took perverse pleasure thinking it was further proof of the city's demise.

Those that did, I wonder how much their perspective has been shaped by first hand experience, and how much by the local news they see. Every time I return home to Detroit I'm disappointed by the local news on TV. I don't know a city whose local TV news place such an emphasis on crime and mayhem as they do in Detroit [[or Southfield, as they may be). It does no service to the city or its inhabitants to place such a focus on the negative. Crime is an important issue, but it must be handled responsibly. Not just by law enforcement, and by Detroit's citizenry, also by the news media who shape the perspectives we see. They are especially important shaping the perspectives of Detroit's neighbors, whose participation and collaboration on solutions the city needs.

A few notes on the data:

    1) At first I accidentally listed only 18 cities for per capita crime for 2014. I've corrected that.
    2) Strangely, there were three cities named Springfield among the to 20 most violent major US cities [[per capita) in 2014.
    3) I thought Detroit is big by land area. Memphis is more than twice as big, Nashville 3.63 times the size!

FLINT, MI – It's a dubious title that no city wants, and Flint had it three years in a row.
But thanks to a 26 percent drop in violent crime in the first six months of 2013, Flint no longer can be dubbed the "most dangerous city in America." That title now belongs to Oakland, Calif., with Flint coming in second.
