Bham, stay in the suburbs where you think your safe. Detroit is not the most dangerous city in the developed world. Where do you get your knowledge from? Fox News?

Statistically speaking... Detroit isn't even the most dangerous city in Michigan.

Given that there are no other major cities in Michigan, Detroit is both the safest and most dangerous major city in Michigan. Not sure what this has to do with anything.

I said nothing about major cities. Statistically speaking, Detroit is not the most dangerous city in Michigan. And if it ever was it probably hasn't been for a very long time.

I always find myself reading this thread so interesting,, I got back from my frequent ride/run/walk along the Cut, I live next door to it.. To accuse this area of being a crime haven, as some of our posters , who generally don't live anywhere near here.. is always laughable, Is Detroit dangerous at times? ofcourse parts of it is.. Is all of it all the time? No,,. youd be crazy to think that always.. Maybe Im just a lucky guy, but been downtown 23 years and not one incident yet and I am out all over daily, sometimes nightly, by foot. You have to use some common sense where and when you go to some areas and places,, But that is not rocket science, that goes for many, many places in our world. The Cut is a fabulous place, and about to get even better, unlike anything else anywhere in Metro.. Just met some kids from Royal Oak on it.. they said to me they love it and come down here often, wished they could"afford" to live downtown,, Now I'm not too sure I like that comment.. There should be room for everyone, as best as we can enable it.. but to get my point across,, Please stop trashing us all the time, our life here is really quite nice. We do not run around scared to death when we step out, there are tons of regular people of all types here,, and its growing monthly.and there is constantly tons of things to do, , sports, restaurants,, incomparable in metro cultural institutions, athletic facilities,, great markets , and a incredible riverfront. Hey was in Birmingham last Friday night,, very nice very affluent, but just not for me, far to much of everyone being a certain image type,, to each his/her own. You have to live where you are happiest.

Nope, I get my info from the FBI Uniform Crime Report, which ranks Detroit with the worst violent crime rate in the U.S.

What major city in the developed world is more dangerous?

First statement is incorrect: Detroit is the most dangerous city anywhere in the developed world

Second statement is incorrect: I get my info from the FBI Uniform Crime Report, which ranks Detroit with the worst violent crime rate in the U.S.

Third statement: now you add 'major city'

    Move your goalposts much?

I was curious about this, so I downloaded the data from the FBI, and it's easy to crunch the numbers. Here are the 20 US cities with a population over 100,000 ranked by rate of violent crime per 1000 inhabitants, for 2014 and 2013:

    2014

State City Violent Crime per 1000
    TENNESSEE MEMPHIS 8.5100754001
    MICHIGAN DETROIT 8.4999192729
    CALIFORNIA OAKLAND 8.0715645713
    MISSOURI ST. LOUIS 7.169696418
    CALIFORNIA STOCKTON 6.5778062416
    MARYLAND BALTIMORE 6.4062723332
    WISCONSIN MILWAUKEE 6.3980825725
    OHIO CLEVELAND 6.3235358355
    ILLINOIS ROCKFORD 5.9383925064
    MISSOURI SPRINGFIELD 5.7769437392
    NEW YORK BUFFALO 5.7382655368
    GEORGIA ATLANTA 5.7203671678
    MISSOURI KANSAS CITY 5.2952220556
    TENNESSEE NASHVILLE 5.1315692188

    MASSACHUSETTS SPRINGFIELD 4.9939447606
    FLORIDA MIAMI 4.9713906031
    CALIFORNIA SAN BERNARDINO 4.9458291729

    2013

State City Violent Crime per 1000
    CALIFORNIA OAKLAND 10.1612579756
    MICHIGAN DETROIT 10.0573090876
    TENNESSEE MEMPHIS 8.230308762
    MISSOURI ST. LOUIS 7.5934744462
    OHIO CLEVELAND 7.0018834424
    MARYLAND BALTIMORE 6.9523070771
    ILLINOIS ROCKFORD 6.7173072186
    ALABAMA BIRMINGHAM 6.4999693398
    WISCONSIN MILWAUKEE 6.3914248383
    CALIFORNIA STOCKTON 6.3276361259
    MISSOURI KANSAS CITY 6.2189321911
    CALIFORNIA RICHMOND 6.1486291352
    NEW YORK BUFFALO 6.0087561682
    NEW JERSEY NEWARK 5.9875074574
    GEORGIA ATLANTA 5.9709103809
    FLORIDA MIAMI 5.6860280023
    MISSOURI SPRINGFIELD 5.5684340926
    MASSACHUSETTS SPRINGFIELD 5.3520503171
    PENNSYLVANIA PHILADELPHIA 5.2808705903
    TENNESSEE CHATTANOOGA 5.0497428694

In most cases population numbers were not available for 2014 so in those cases I used the population for 2013 instead.

I've gotta run now, but if anyone's interested I can run reports on other types of crimes.

P.S: It's cool we can post tables here!
