Personally Id open a art gallery
Coffee house
antique shop
Restaurant
Gym/health club
Dog boarding and daycare
Reception hall
What couldnt it be????
Of course Id want it to be something that benefits from the architecture as a customer magnet, not like an office....... but it could be, Like graphic arts , interior design studio......

1) Ann Arbor is not a suburb of Detroit. St. Andrew's is in Ann Arbor.
2) My argument was that with the advent of the automobile we no longer value our built environment. St. Andrew's Ann Arbor was built in 1869 well before the automobile. The suburbs and their hideous "architecture" grew well after and as a direct result of the proliferation of the automobile and expressways. The storefront churches you point out also came about during this period which was, not coincidentally, Detroit's decline. Please read my post before just posting pictures of Ann Arbor.
that churchbrew was fantastic, and in PA yet...... thanks for the example
Far as building new churches in the suburbs, and restoring old ones in detroit, a teacher of mine at CCS said it best.
"People need to have something to inspire them and give them a sense of purpose, societies of old built churches, we build malls" circa 1983
in addition we now build for temporary use....... not to last.

Does anyone know the name of the firm or architect that designed this church?
Near Boston, Massachusetts, many former churches have been converted to condos: http://centersandsquares.com/2010/02...ated-churches/
