It matters because this keeps happening, and the life span of these publicly funded sports facilities keeps shrinking. St. Louis and the state of Missouri are about to blow $400 million of public money to build a brand new football stadium right next to a perfectly good twenty-year-old one whose construction they're still paying off. Our football stadium is, what, 13 years old now? Won't be long, I'm sure, before the other fossilized plutocrat who owns the Lions decides he could use some more luxury boxes or some shit. Or, hell, what's to stop Ilitch from asking for a new baseball stadium in four or five years when Comerica hits the two-decade mark? We need to figure out how to learn from our mistakes, or these scams will just get bigger and more frequent.
