I'm confused so can we or not feed the homeless? I just bought a case of highlife to feed the homeless.

    Quoted from the FREEP article;
Ron Scott, a spokesman for the Detroit Coalition Against
Police Brutality, said "The ticketing and warning stops that have occurred on the Island appear to be meant to discourage certain people from enjoying this historic park. We will not tolerate that.”

Does he have data and facts to back this claim up or is he just being a little reactionary as the State Police try to enforce laws on the books, I would agree they are taking the "NYC broken windows" approach but I hardly think its race based.

Maybe its meant to discourage people with lots of outstanding warrants? Frankly, those people are seldom the best citizens.....

Oh God. Ron Scott. He has a mien of an elder statesman. He speaks slowly and appears to speak a lot of wisdom. People get involved with him But he wants crazy people who aren't abashed to jump out in front of traffic waving signs covered with huge lies about the police. Are they aggrieved or bi-polar or both? Then he enlists them to carry his water. To show up at protests. To make scenes in court and be escorted out.

If the "certain people" are gray haired old white ladies illegaly feeding the geese I might have to join the protest.

Oh ..... I remember the days when I used to ride my bike around Belle Isle and speak to Mayor Archer, council members and newspaper editors. The last time I attempted to ride my bike around belle isle, the driverless cars were there and I was denied access to the island. Apparently Belle Isle is no longer a state park but a privatizer's dream?

Sorry gnome, but I used to skate around the island and, yes, former Mayor Archer used to jog around Belle Isle, with a handful of security people, followed by his black limo. I chatted with him a few times. The State did hold the remote controlled car thing on the island, and part of it was closed off to traffic. With Penske's Grand PriX, commandeering half of the island going on four months now, and now the Red BULL auto race being held in July, I would say privatization is very real threat.

The best prevarication is using bits of reality to add credence to the an otherwise preposterous scenario.

The Island was never wholly closed off to citizens. A small part of the Island was used for a Press event involving driverless cars. Just as parts of Cass was closed during the filming of Batman.

To conflate incidents and quilt them together to fit a narrative is disingenuous.

Ahhh then he wasn't mayor when I used to see him because he was jogging solo....maybe one officer.

Yes the island was closed off to Detroiters when the remote controlled cars had their event. I promptly called my city council person and I have documentation to prove that Detroiters could not enter the island by bike that Saturday. I was not provided any explanation by the security guard but I received a response from the Belle Isle Conservancy.

I agree with you Honky Tonk about privatization. Thank You for the support! I would never post anything on this page without having the receipts or supporting documentation. I am a long time lurker so I know better!

Was Belle Isle closed during the entire event? No. But no signage was posted and the security guard did not have a valid explanation other than there was a private event taking place on the island......

I used to ride my bike around Belle Isle every Saturday morning - 6:30am or so.....never had any problems until 2014.

25 years ago, you could bicycle down the middle of Woodward on Sunday evening, blindfolded -- and never even see a car.

Increased activity. Share your private space.

I was thinking the same thing, I saw Mayor Archer downtown [[Ren-Cen,WSU football games, DIA) quite a bit when I was a student at WSU, and he never had more than 1 guy with him.

    2) Enlighten us, what is the racial makeup of the population of Belle Isle? How many people live there?
    3) No conclucsions of how "representative" the racial makeup of that police department can be drawn based on one person's interaction with two officers. If I encouter a black police officer in Ann Arbor, what conclusions can I draw about how representative he is of the community he serves or how representative he is of his own department?

The only ticket I ever received from the State was from a Black trooper; therefore ALL State troopers are Black and prejudiced.
