    Default Detroit area buffets

Anyone recommend any real good ones?

Most buffet food is notoriously bad. Prime example: Harbor House. Vomit city.

Any comments on Greektown casino buffet?

MGM and Motorcity have really nice buffet's. They aren't cheap though. I go to the MGM on Wednesday night for crab leg night. It's $32.00, but the crab is the jumbo snow crab and very good. There is also sushi and an assortment of other awesome dishes. They also have a mongolian grill and a huge desert area.

I used to go to the Motorcity buffet and it was just as good as the MGM, but crab leg night was Friday and I rather go to MGM on Wednesday.

I think there other nights are $28.00 and don't have the crab, but still offer a really nice spread.

Greektown is only $10.00, but it's not anywhere near the quality of food, or the amount of choice. Not a bad option for $10.00 though.

... I remember being at Motor city Casino, on Fish [[and lobster?) Friday, it was $30, easily.... I'm allergic to 99% of seafood, so I had to pass... so can you really eat as much as you want at these casino places?

I used to go to the Peacock in Dearborn for the lunch buffet, if you like Indian.

There's a good Chinese buffet with lots of seafood, raw oysters and legit Chinese food at 5 and Middlebelt, I think it's called Fortune Buffet. Their sushi is also actually pretty good. I take the folks there sometimes.

I done pulled some bulldozer action at the Old Country Buffet. I ate enough food to satisfy 6-8 people.

The Greektown Casino buffet was, basically, disappointing. The pizza, fried chicken, salad bar and beverage service/bussing = above average. Everything else was significantly reheated/defrosted/low end catering quality. The Greek section was, well, Golden Fleece after a night of drinking would put it to shame. The moussaka was coney island loose burger consistancy with cheese and broken pasta pieces thrown in. Enough said. Now, I spent
20 + years in food service and I am not being hyper critical...I understand their operation, but it is low end catering meant to keep the food cost's low and they are achieving that goal. I'll bet Motor City Buffet has similar food costs based on their volume and price scale.

The decision to undercut the competition at 9.95 at Greektown was business only. If you want quality and real cooking, go to Motor City.

BTW, the dining room in the hotel lobby looked great and the menu looked decent. Has anyone tried it?

Peacock in Dearborn appears closed, door boarder over, for sale signs in 2nd story windows and city citations plastering the plywood.

Wasnt there a place called the Sign of the Beefeater back in 60s...70s?

A localc hain that ran into problems with the "Beefeater" symbol which was UK copyrighted, so they became Beefcarver. The last one was [[is) in Dearborn.

There is also a Beefcarver in Royal Oak on Woodward. It is NOT buffet, it is ala carte.

I refuse to eat at those public pig troughs. It makes me sick to see the way people load their plates when they go for buffet.

I'm a large woman, but I can't [[won't) eat the way some of the folks I've seen at a buffet pack it in.

    Gluttony.

Like others, I'm not a big fan of 'all you can eater's', but from time to time, for many of my relatives, these places are good meet and greet places....or maybe I should say meet and eat places.

However, I suggest keeping it in the hood. Steve's Soul Food Market, 8847 Grand River [[313) 894-3464. Also, there is a location on E.Franklin, but I believe there is a dress code for the Franklin location.

    [[support Black owned Business)

If Black owned is not your thing, If you don't mind traveling way out, Then, the more popular place for many, and I mean many Black Detroiter's, Fire Mountain is a place to be. I don't suggest you go on Sunday's, that is, unless you don't mind waiting.

Thanks for the heads up Bob. I guess I will have to travel to Windsor to get a decent curry now.

Yeah, every time I'm down there I stop by the Greektown Buffet. It's an international buffet with prime rib. They have a very large selection compared to any other buffet I've been to. The restaurant looks new and very clean. No waterstain marks on the ceiling tile or peeling paint like I'd see at a Chinese Buffet. $9.99 including drink is pretty good value.

The one in Deaborn is still open, but you'd best get there early. They close promptly at 8 pm.

I just looked up Fire Mountain, and it's just Old Country Buffet with a new name. It's all the same chain.

Can't we just get along? We are just talking about food here. I admit that every now and then I like to go to a good buffet and eat myself silly. If that is my only real vice, I'm not doing too bad.

I've been to Fire Mountain and it's like 10 times better than Old Country Buffet. Better selections and they even have grilled to order steaks. They grill right in front of you.
It can get pretty crowded in there, though.

Golden Corral [[another chain) in Westland is also a good buffet, which I feel is a step above OCB!
