Algonquin Provincial Park. It still blows my mind that something so beautiful and wild is only 6.5 hours away.

    THIS.

Is it really 6.5 hrs away? I went in high school[[about 10 yrs ago) for dog sledding in the winter. It's beautiful. It's Canada's Yellowstone.

You're not really supposed to bring in fresh picked berries. But, if discreetly placed, the customs guys will almost never mess with them. I bring them and other fresh produce across maybe 10 times a summer. Since the big tightening up following 2001 I've only had a problem twice - and one time the guy let me keep the fruit anyway.

In the 70's and 80's my favorite excursions to Windsor were for lunch or dinner at Ye Olde Steak House, which served Canadian Select beef and other meats, and best onion soup ever. Even onion soup I've had in Paris was not as tasty! Sadly it closed not long ago and reports of its later years indicated a deline in quality. Does anyone more familiar with the current Windsor scene know of any newer restaurants serving traditional fare of eceptional quality?

Erie Street was mentioned earlier. Lots of good Italian fare there! Can't think of much downtown that stands out. Unfortunately, there seems to be the same gravitation to watered-down chain places in Canada that there is here.

I suspect the Casino may have a good steakhouse, but then again I have never ate there so I can't vouch one way or the other.

The theater in Stratford is first-rate, especially in you like Shakespeare. If you go, go through Port Huron or take the ferry from Marine City to Sombra. The customs folk seem to be a little mellower at the ferry, and you won't have the huge backup you sometimes get between Port Huron and Sarnia. It's also shorter than going through Windsor.

Here are the performances/venues for the coming season.

FESTIVAL THEATRE: King Lear; Crazy for You; A Midsummer Night's Dream; The Beaux' Strategem

AVON THEATRE: Man of La Mancha; Alice Through the Looking Glass; Hay Fever

TOM PATTERSON THEATRE: Mother Courage; King John; Antony and Cleopatra

STUDIO THEATRE: Christina, The Girl King

VENUE TBA: A Midsummer Night's Dream [[a chamber play)

OK, Here's something you can do. Wake up early. Stop @ Avalon Bakery. Grab 2 coffees and something you can eat on the go. Pick up friend and 2 bikes. Drive to the Kingsville Ferry. Take Ferry over to Pelee Island. Spend the day cycling, wine tasting, swimming, having lunch, exploring. [[Summer is the preferable season) Take last Ferry back, sit on upper deck. Friend sleeps on your shoulder, you watch sunset on Lake Erie, buzzed on good wine, thinking "I'll have to Thank Honky Tonk for suggesting this". Don't forget road rash kit.

I used to like Canada. But their women's and men's hockey teams beat us. They dominated curling [[wow, what a surprise). But first, they had to go and give us Justin Bieber. I say we clean up those cannons over at Ft. Wayne. I say we aim them across the river. I say we take out their casino, Tim Horton's, The Beer Store, and Harvey's Burgers. That'll fix them.

Always declare any fresh fruit and vegetables when crossing the border. At worst they will make you throw them out. At best they will let you keep them. As long as you declare you won't get into trouble.

If you don't declare and they catch you with them, that's when you could run into fines and big trouble. Smuggling produce isn't worth it.

Take all their sweep brooms. That'll put an end to the curling dominance!

There's many waterfalls within day trip driving distance of Windsor/Detroit on both sides of the border.

That view just shows some of them. Zoom in and you'll see more. And that by no means is a comprehensive map of them, although it does get most of the good ones. There's more of them hidden in the various woods and parks if you feel up to searching.

And since many of the best waterfalls are along the Niagara Escarpment and the Bruce Trail, I'd recommend going anywhere along there. http://brucetrail.org Even if you don't care about waterfalls, there's many interesting features [[like caves) and other sightseeing opportunities along the trail.

For a treat, head over to Colchester Beach & Harbor, bring a kayak or your small fishing boat there is a public launch in the harbor or just hang out at the sandy and well maintained beach that also has a massive pirate ship water/play thing for the kids that sits above the beach overlooking Lake Erie. We used to rent a cottage there starting in the late 70's and has continued every year to this day... There are several very old cemeteries, one that has a few headstones dating back to the late 1700's, a one room school house [[closed but a great photo op) there are a few restaurant/bar options and also another 10 minutes from the water is the town of Harrow with more eating options and a few antique shops. The place is a real gem located just 45 min from the tunnel/bridge.

My personal favorite this time of year - sorry if anyone's mentioned it
already - are the multiple greenhouses of Colasanti's Tropical Gardens in
Kingsville, Ontario. According to their website, though, you CAN NOT
BRING THEIR PLANTS back to the U.S. Maybe if you declare them, as
someone posted earlier, you have a chance of bringing them back, but
there's a chance customs inspectors may ask you to ditch them.

Our family vacations as a kid were quite limited. That's why going to Toronto in 1984 was worth it. I remember eating a standard sundae from a McDonald's there [[being lactose intolerant, that was pushing it), but with enough walking, I wound up going "Buuu-iiick!" right on a busy street corner; which is odd because it's usually trouble on the other end of the digestive tract. My parents confirmed that it was because the McDonald's there used a richer genuine cream than the ones in America.

We ended up visiting Niagara falls and the CN tower, but being acrophobic as a kid, I dampered things with my intimidation of huge, expansive things. Even nightlife [[which we almost never ventured in Detroit as a family) seemed intimidating, but we ended up at the Organ Grinder which was a fun time as a kid. http://www.blogto.com/city/2012/12/t...organ_grinder/

The Royal Ontario Museum was very grandiose and over-powering as a kid; I remember the giant squid replica behind glass at the top of a giant stone staircase really freaked me out. I was able to do a heraldry rubbing in a giant stone hall.

The science museum was awesome [[saw a lecture by Moog, more talk than bweeeep!) with tilting rooms, a hall that records your shadow, and some viewing booths and one with this disturbing National Film Board of Canada cartoon
. I remember being able to interact well with the kids there.

Yeah we visited caves in Point Pelee. The boat ride was choppy, but it was better to get splashed at the bow of the boat than huddle with a crowd inside a cabin with bees and wasps hovering around in there. I recall one diner we were at had a hacked Pac-Man game that had you playing Popeye's head running around gobbling green dots.

Sad, to say that all my experiences in Windsor have been bad, sometimes down right rotten!

If in Windsor you might want to try The Twisted Apron restaurant on Wyandotte street, not too far from Walkerville district. Have been there a few times now, great food and beverage. Then head over to Erie street to the Italian bakery for deserts to go.

After lunch go on the guided tour of Canadian Club/ Hiram Walker. Beautiful woodwork, ledgers from Hiram Walker himself [[who lived in Detroit) Lots of history about Detroit river and prohibition, how Al Capone, Ford factory and Catholic church down the road supplied whiskey to the US, how whiskey is made, gardens, tasting whiskey at the end of tour, makes a good trip.

Another vote for Niagara-on-the-Lake. Close enough to the falls, but a picturesque attraction unto itself---and a completely different [[low-key) vibe & demographic than the circus sideshow of Clifton Hill. In addition to the restaurants, there are several excellent B&Bs, some of them nestled in the surrounding wine country.

Actually, the drive paralleling the entire Niagara River from Fort Erie to Niagara-on-the-Lake is one of my personal favorites in all of North America. The US side is not be shortchanged, either: Buffalo has some hidden treasures and the villages of Lewiston, Stella Niagara, and Youngstown/Fort Niagara rival bucolic New England.

I'm amazed that Colasanti's was mentioned several times over and no one mentioned the Greenview Aviaries Park & Zoo, bordering Ridgetown [[about an hour's drive from Windsor). A 3+ decades old private zoo that with the exception of the arctic animals exhibit, not only puts Colasanti's to shame, but has a better overall selection than the Detroit Zoo. Zebras, lions, tigers, jaguars, cougars, wolves, bears, baboons, buffalo, bald eagles and hundreds of other different birds, animals and reptiles. It has it all, plus a miniature Shakespeare village. http://www.greenviewaviariesparkandz...t-the-animals/ Admission $14CDN.
