Actually have 3 "junk yard" dogs. Also, a never seen 3rd floor cat. All pussy cats but in an event of invasion they go on high alert. The Pit bull would tear them apart along with our German Sheppard. The Puggle would scream yodels loud enough to wake the dead.

Our community is amazing, many of us like to walk and young men now escort us, it is just so courtly.

I highly recommend a shotgun with #4's and there's nothing wrong with a "warning shot". The difference being instead of aiming for the ground you aim right for the center of the chest. That should be a fair warning to the would be burglar, any possible accomplices and the other scumbags that may have the similar ideas.

Forgot to mention the bitch at the door, that would be me!

I believe I mentioned once, we help transition homeless folk. I find our current residents charming but I sure wouldn't fuck with any of them. Three men, two street, one country. All armed in some fashion, perhaps dangerous, they are very good to us, as we are to them. These are good decent people,, but like I said, I wouldn't cross them. We house and feed, assist in finding jobs and housing and they move on. They are appreciative and very protective.

I want to go back to positives. I have such lovely neighbors, young and old. These thugs are close to a thing of the past.

We have a neighborhood meeting to discuss these invasions Sunday. Now we are all asked to bring a dish to pass. Sounds like it will more of a xmas food fest then a problem solving meeting and that is ok too. We have an extensive call list, we call two people , they call two people, etc. The menu is sounding better and better. This is a small but well connected community. Food forges some great bonds.

Love my neighbors, love my neighborhood

Interesting, sumas. Reading this this thread and a little research into the Boggs Center took me back to the days of when I was a radical labor student and participant. That was how my path in life crossed with the admin of this forum Lowell.

I actually felt the tug of wanting to pick up where I left off. The young kids today need to know things not being taught in our schools. The blinders have been lifted so to speak.

Dan, Speaking of the need to learn things beyond conventional lessons, maybe an interview I recorded recently will reinforce your decision to pick up your previous work.

The video came about as I was talking with Nahru Lampkin [[aka The Bongo Man who performs outside Tigers and Lions games) regarding a music project we did together. He mentioned how he happened to switch from working as a school security guard to being a coach on a championship student robotics team. I asked him if he would tell this story in a video interview.

Below is a link to that interview [[if you watch first 3 min. intro, you might be drawn into the whole 25). Using traditional measures of education, Nahru would be assumed unqualified for the "new economy," yet earlier this year he went with the Detroit team to compete in Omaha and Anaheim.

While statistics indicate a daunting percentage of undereducated Detroit residents, attention needs to also be paid to utilizing and developing School of Life knowledge. Is this hidden potential a sufficient part of plans for the city's future and reducing crime? Maybe it's too late for the Islandview Village perps, but the kids in Nahru's story might make better neighbors: https://vimeo.com/80161620

Thanks for sharing. The man speaks the truth. What he says applies to adults as well as kids.

I frequently discover neglected talents in adults. They come to assume they have little to offer just because they failed some arbitrary assessment in life. Their surprise that anyone can see their real value tells the whole story.

We need to pat each other on the back more often.

An area charter school opened in our area this fall, Grace Lee and James Boggs institute. Very creative programming with assistance from the Bogg center. We have had personal issues but hope to be mentors there next year.

Funny that! Three men, 3 dogs and an attack cat. Two more invasions Friday, one successful, one not. Honest people, we just have never dealt with this bull. The interesting thing is this area is mostly homeowners going into a third generation. Strangers stand out. These are newbies, One of the four is on Sheridan, most likely where they are housing stolen stuff. They don't have a vehicle, the others are in the cheapie apartments on the Blvd. Easily found and tracked at the local liquor store [[booze) and the area gas station [[drugs). This little Village is highly educated and we can do the leg work but the police better bring it home as to arrests.

All threads have a denouement. Thought I would wrap this up with a report and a few thoughts.

The meeting was well attended, we get some sniffs from more dense blocks in our community but seems we [[my block ) came up with food, cash and opinions. Met some very interesting folk. Several on this board know I find it impossible to be quiet or tactful. I follow the rules but hey, things need to be said. I told my neighbor, kick me to just shut up. He didn't and said he liked my input. Most likely being kind.

This is such a quiet safe area and 4 young thugs are doing this. Half of the people just bleated we need to find and embrace and employ these kids. My attitude is we need to identify and remove them. Folks want to re hab them be my guest.

Please do not get me wrong, I think jails are a useless waste of public dollars that accomplish nothing but create better criminals. Short term though, I want these little turds off my street. Not likely they will hit my block. Spacious as we may be... this is one sweet caring block. Sumas

Hopefully one of the residents will kill the bastards. There is no need in society for scumbags like them. The prey on the weak. I suggest you post in detail the fund raiser your planning on doing such as where, when, why. I will be happy to donate but I need to see the details. You should also consider posting the event on Facebook. Good luck and shoot the bastards!

Sumas, what became of your neighbor that needed a new door, windows, and computer equipment? Are you still having a fundraiser, or has this lady been helped sufficiently?

We meet as a community again Jan. 5th to finalize fundraiser plans and other issues. One lady decided we all needed "rape" whistles, an idea so stupid and funny I promptly gave her $10 bucks. Serious, if a densely populated block didn't hear a door being battered and a window broken what good would a Whistle do? Sorry I was that amused, albeit polite.

Just as an aside we had a neighbor who liked to sit on his porch making cat sounds at all the ladies. I am sure we all get that inference. A friend actually gave me a fog horn, which I didn't use in retaliation. as it would disturb other neighbors. The thought of using it did amuse me, I must admit. Cured him of that by playing Werewolfs of London, and howling every time he did his "pussy" routine. More likely his Mom who lives up way, Miss Grace, caught wind of this and shut him up.

Just an update, the head toad is on Sheridan, one lives on Helen and two in low income housing sponsored by Messiah Church. They had representatives at the meeting and if we can get more specific they will take action.

It is nice to know that we live in a vibrant community that can rally troops relatively quickly. Will post an update when I have more particulars. It is nice to know that people elsewhere care. Thanks all! Sumas

In our neighborhood, we have a text msg broadcast list so that when anyone is in danger or sees anything suspicious, everyone can be made aware. The four police assigned to our neighborhood are also on this list, and we have their cell phone numbers as well. It's been a very useful tool at curbing crime, and we have also used it to catch and arrest a handful of petty thieves breaking into cars on Michigan Avenue and one who was putting cars on blocks and stealing tires. Our neighborhood association meets monthly and police come to the meeting as well.

Does Islandview have this kind of relationship with DPD?

    I was wondering that too....

Over the past few years, we have discussed the texting concept and I whole heartily support it. At the past meeting at Boggs, a volunteer offered to put that program together.

Our block club president attends police community meetings. Genesis church had an intern that headed a monthly community meeting which was well attended A steering committee of which I was a part, met monthly and reported to the larger group. Alas, the program ended with funding gone.
