Default Quiet wealth in Metro Detroit? 9-figure families still left?

We don't really hear about people outside of the billionaires:

Hank & Doug Meijer of Grand Rapids, $8.3 billion [[Meijer)
Richard DeVos of Holland, $6.8 billion [[Amway)
Dan Gilbert of Franklin, $3.9 billion [[Quicken Loans)
Michael and Marian Ilitch of Bingham Farms, $3.2 billion [[Little Caesars)
Ronda Stryker of Kalamazoo, $3 billion [[Stryker)
Alfred Taubman of Bloomfield Hills, $2.7 billion [[real estate)
John Brown of Kalamazoo, $1.5 billion [[Stryker)
Matty Moroun of Grosse Pointe, $1.5 billion [[trucking/bridge)
William Ford Sr. of Grosse Pointe $1.4 billion [[Ford)
John Stryker of Kalamazoo, $1.4 billion [[Stryker)
Roger Penske of Bloomfield Hills, $1.3 billion [[auto)
Manoj Bhargava of Farmington Hills, $1.1 billion [[Five-Hour Energy)
Peter Karmanos of Orchard Lake, $1 billion [[Compuware)
Are there many 9-figure net worth people/families that *still* call Metro Detroit home?

Yes, there are. Metro Detroit is in the Top 10 of U.S. metros by number of high-net worth individuals.

There's lots of money in the area. It may be less obvious than in some other metros, but the auto industry still throws off serious wealth.

Help the thread and rattle off a few. Some are probably more obvious than others, but depending on where you grew up and what you and your family is involved in, they might not be obvious to others.

Yup, when it comes to metropolitan regions with lots of capital, metro Detroit is richly endowed.

So our regional problems are not about money ...

There are plenty of billionaires in Metro Detroit that don't make any of these lists either.

In order for Forbes to estimate your worth, there has to be a paper trail.

That usually means buying and selling stock.

If all your wealth comes from a privately-held company, then Forbes has nothing to work with.

Metro Detroiters tend to be low-key about their wealth. Unless they want the notoriety, most keep the depths of their wealth pretty quiet.

Anyone with a successful moderate-sized business should e worth eight figures and there are a lot of them in the metro.

I started my post before the extensive listings above. There are many billionaires within those lists that do not make Forbes list of billionaires.

Why? Because they don't want to...

If the DeVos and Meijer families are included it's because they have provided their worth to Forbes, or Forbes can extrapolate their worth from the retail sales.

You sure about that? Billioniares are rare, and don't hide in plain sight.

The Forbes list, BTW lists all known billionaires, not only those with verifiable assets. For example, Chapo Guzman, the infamous Mexican drug kingpin [[who has been in hiding for years) is on the Forbes list.

You know what they say about the Boston Brahmin...they only appear thrice in public, when they are born, they get married, and when they die. Maybe this is true for Detroit's brahmin?

If all your wealth comes from a privately-held company, then Forbes has nothing to work with.

Metro Detroiters tend to be low-key about their wealth. Unless they want the notoriety, most keep the depths of their wealth pretty quiet.
No kidding, wealth makes you a target for thieves and gold-diggers. Why on earth would anyone want to deal with those hassles unless you have to. Look at those poor schmucks on TMZ, I would not want their lives.

You're right motz. Trickle down wealth ceased after Reagan; we're now living under Obama's trickle up poverty.

Mark- you seem to be dying to know, but I'm not about to tell. These families cherish their privacy.

That explains why you have no clue how much they're worth.

But there are three families that I know personally on those lists that are worth north of $2 billion each.

Notwithstanding these claims, billionaire families don't hide in plain sight. You realize people pay taxes on capital gains, right?

I never knew tax information was public on capital gains. Can you show me the billionaire list.
