Default George V. Young Post Office on West Fort

When Barbara Rose Collins represented Detroit in Congress, she introduced legislation to name the federal court house in downtown Detroit for Theodore Levin and the post office on West Fort for George V. Young. Eventually, Congress enacted that legislation.
I know who Theodore Levin was. Who was George V. Young and what did he accomplish?
    Thank you very much.

It's George W. Young. He was a longtime employee of the post office in Detroit. Reportedly one of the founders of the Postal Workers Union local, and a union official. He was eventually made Assistant Postmaster of Detroit in the 1970s. The first African-American to hold that position. He was also the younger brother of one Coleman A. Young.

Besides the retail store and District offices, what other postal functions are still handled in that building? I know most outgoing mail is handled through the Metroplex in Pontiac and bulk mail/parcels through Allen Park, but given the sheer number of mail trucks which are constantly coming and going from that building, SOME mail is still handled in one way or another in this facility.

Did you know there are still railroad tracks in the lower level? Even though the Railway Post Offices had less than 10 years on Michigan routes when the building opened in the early 1960s, mail was still an important commodity moved by rail and the tracks still exist. You can see them on the 10th Street side north of Jefferson.

Nothing really. Whatever little processing takes place there is handled by a skeleton crew. Most of the processors have been relocated to either the Metroplex, Allen Park, reassigned as letter carriers or relocated out of state altogether. There's still talks of shuttering the processing center completely. The retail store isn't even open 24 hours anymore.
