Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought Mattys temper tantrum concerning the proposed new bridge started simply because he wanted to build the second bridge right next to the Ambassador Bridge.

Save from mounting motion activated 50 cal qauds on a vacant building how is anybody expected to maintain any building.

You are talking about groups of people that think that's it's thier god given right to take any liberties with in the city and proud of it.

Money makes money , he has the money if it was feasible before to rehabilitate the property I would think it would have been .

So when he is bored I guess he goes down there and paints graffiti and smashes windows out etc.

The anger is from being able to put a face on the evils of the city instead of looking in the mirror .

I would think and hope now is the time to put the past behind and concentrate on what is best served moving the city forward all of this anger even if rightly so is counterproductive and blinding clear judgement .

Has anybody that has used MCS in the past as some form of intertainment or to further thier personal agenda actually contributed to its upkeep? I am guessing no.

so just look forward ignoring what he did and blame the graffiti artist and not the billionaire who bought a celebrated building in good condition and let it become detroits biggest eyesore?

you do realize he bought the place in a condition where it would have taken little money to rehabilitate and let it rot to its current state? that's ok in your eyes? apparently it's wrong to point fingers since he's the misunderstood billionaire.

If Matty Mouron cannot maintain the buildings he owns, then why doesn't he sell them? Why then does he just hold on to a vacant building that continually gets vandalized?

I am just pointing out another side you so conveniently want to ignore. Without looking at all sides your argument doesn't even have water to hold it up.
As for the station I was in the upper parts of the building before you were born, and except for the blown out windows there is very little difference between the condition now and when I was up there in the 1970's. Yes he has not done much with the station but then its been a shthole on the upper floors going back to when Amtrak ran the place.
The one thing that seems to get overlooked is its still standing and he does have the money to raze it, and that's far better than all the buildings I have watched disappear over the last 40 plus years.

you continue to point out that there's another side of the story yet fail to shed any light on it. I'm not missing anything, you are speculating in the defense of a man who neglects his property.

great that you were in there before I was born, very relevant. the tower portion was never realized so saying who cares since it was never used Is not an argument. the exterior has been destroyed along with its grand spaces but since the other floors were never utilized its ok... cause that makes sense.

so he was incapable of putting a few million to mothball it but will pay tens of millions to demolish? we should be thankful he hasn't torn down the historic structure that he let rot?

The upper floors were never used so I'd imagine they weren't the greatest looking.

Why do you have such a hard on for Matty Moroun?

Just imagine of he used the 30 million or so he spent in the anti bridge campaign on the station.

exactly. I don't know how accurate but I've seen the number 80 million tossed around for the renovation. even if that number is low the money spent on that campaign of misinformation could have made a huge dent. I guess we should ask him before jumping to conclusions though...

I know the upper floors were never used, my father commented along time ago that they were bad back in the 1950's,
The threads have been very unappealing lately and I was bored today plus Matty gets so much hate I thought I would add some fuel to the fire and decided to be the lone dissenter. Although I do have to say there is a lot more than we do not know about when it comes to the bridge, and the MCS yet we fly off the handle everytime we read his name!
Last I like that he can tell the city/county/state where to stick it!

I never said who cares! Please stop assuming things. All I said was the condition was not much better than it is now. As for not torn down yes we I am happy he has not torn it down. Its so overbuilt its not as bad as you would like us to believe, and you cannot restore the station if its razed!
Again before your were born I witnessed the destruction of some of the greatest residential architecture in the world. All of it was in perfect condition but thrown away because nobody cared, so don't lecture me on what is good and bad with historic buildings!

Except for some more rust and broken windows the building is not much different than it was in the 1970's as I said on the UPPER FLOORS. As for the concourse and the platform they have deteriorated considerably from when they were in use. But even when they were in use they were not in great shape.

you continue to bring up your age as if that means you know what your talking about. not going to fall for that but nice try.

when was the last time you were in the building? my first time was 2005 and last time was 2009. in that short period of time I was amazed how much the place deteriorated. you have no idea what you are talking about if you think it's in the same condition as when he purchased it. just because it was so overbuilt doesn't mean it's not in bad shape. it's intact steel frame isn't what people like about the building, it's the decorative elements of the building and grand spaces which continue to crumble and deteriorate.

feel free to stop making excuses whenever.

still waiting to hear the other side of the story that you insist exists...

I somewhat agree with you though. He doesn't owe it to anybody to fix up his properties, sure it'd be great if he did, but you're right, he doesn't have to. I think a lot people are so mad at Moroun because he puts a face to the problem of blight and neglect in the city of Detroit. There are countless other rotting buildings that are owned by people that probably should fix em or demolish em, but because nobody knows who they are or what they look like Matty gets the brunt of the bitching. Look at the Hotel Charlevoix [[Ralph Sachs) or the Wurlitzer Building [[Paul and Daphne Curtis). These buildings are dropping bricks that have the potential to kill pedestrians, but because most people don't know who these owners are, they save up that slumlord hatred for Mr. Moroun because, he's the one people know, he's the one whose face the media shows.

For gods sake there are burnt up shells of buildings up and down every radial road in the city that are owned by someone. As was stated earlier it's partially the city's fault for not hitting these fools with fines in the first place.

the city definitely needs to step up on enforcement and I have beefs with other owners, but matty bought an icon and has plenty of money. comparing a billionaire to a lawyer who buys a building as a potential investment isn't fair in my eyes. there is absolutely no reason that that building had to rot the way it has.

When it comes to historic architecture you do not have a leg to stand on but I do like this you think you more than the rest of us thing you have going on. Newsflash you did not invent ruin porn! I helped a group 30 plus years ago to take images of buildings that are now long gone. I think they would have liked the term ruin porn but for them they were just a places to take cool pics not for an agenda or to make money off of their photographs.
As for the MCS its been about ten years, and yes the newer images show more rust than there was even a couple years ago. but the basic structure under all the surface of the rust and neglect is not going away anytime soon. One of the contributing factors to the building's current status, nobody wants to loose their shirt razing the station.

Answer the question. Did Mr. Mouran cause the building to be in the shape it is in personally?

Did he bust the windows out?
Did he spray graffiti on in?

    Etc etc.

Have the ones that busted the windows out offered to help replace them?

Have the grafitti artists offered to help clean up?

In the time I have been on this site only one grafitti person has come forward to offer to clean up [[John)

Its all the nasty little billionaires fault, nobody else's , is that how it works?

I do not condon what has happened in the past ,but to allow the ills of the past to shape the future is insane just as it is to place 100% fault on the property owner because the city allowed lawness to continue unabated.

You do not starve a city out to gain satisfaction on getting even, that's silly and by reading posts here and other places that's the objective. You concentrate in getting the city in order so these things are stopped before they get started.

People vandalized my home before but I fixed it. I find it hard to believe that if Mouron did something with the building and put it to use that people wouldn't vandalize it as much. How many people do you see vandalizing the Fox Theater?

that's what people say who make crap up. "I know what I'm talking about but don't have to share it with you!" that always flies on this site right?

no I think anyone with eyeballs knows more on this than you. an agenda? I started visiting these places as an architecture major documenting long before shooting for a living. just curious, where did I mention ruin porn or even photographing these places? I was talking about viewing the structure over a period of time from a vantage of significance. jabs at age and my profession and I'm the one with an agenda? interesting. good to know you're trying to enter a pissing match with someone so "young"

just so were clear, when it gets to the point where it's just a steel skeleton sitting there you're going to say its in as good of shape?

Shollin you are correct but the question is what can be realistically done to make the building pay for itself? The police station was pie in the sky and the numbers never added up. I have never seen any comprehensive plan to restore the building. Matty was willing to listen to the city for the police station and of course he would have made a killing on the deal. Maybe he is waiting for a viable self sustaining plan before he spends on money?

abandoning the building and not securing is the fault of taggers and scrapers now? why did this place become a target? the billionaire was overcome by kids with spray cans? that can't possibly be your argument. it's a miracle that not every building was destroyed and scrapped.
