The above makes sense but then why should the US Department of Education be brought into this to make decisions for the tribes and possibly overrule the tribes? What delegated power gives the USDE the right to make such decisions for tribes and even overrule tribes?from gakhekwe post #37: "In the case of CMU, the Saginaw Chippewa worked with CMU and received some benefits to the tribe as well as significant changes to the school's curriculum pertaining to Natives, and changes to the appearance of the logo and how the name was represented during sporting events. Win-win.
There is nothing stopping any school from entering into negotiations to benefit local community members , address the appearance and presentation of their logo/mascot, and win approval to keep their moniker."
On another topic gakhekwe touched in her post #31, names like Chieftains, Chiefs, and Warriors are not specific to Indians without accompanying logos. I wonder if some communities would be just willing to drop the accompanying Indian specific logos. Substitution Roman, Viking, or Zulu 'warrior' motifs could replace Indian motifs. My guess is that it would be easier to start from scratch with a new name even without PC bureaucrats butting in. I'm all for a local Indian named high school team to consider "Berserkers" if a name change is required. It might create an interest in Scandinavian history.
