I think you hit the nail on the head. In the plans and they mention phase 1 of the plan starting in that area. Also, in the section about land assembly they show an aerial photo of the corner of Pierce and Chene, right where the mystery work is happening.

If this is indeed what is happening, my question is... who is funding this massive $200 million dollar project?

Oh no ! Sounds like evil gentrification by rich outsiders! Or progress? But not by Black people! Even if the Grosse Pointe developer grew up on that property in his grandfather's house! Evil outsiders trying to take over the City and all that Black people have built over the generations since they were finally allowed to leave Black Bottom.

This is an AWESOME plan. Absolutely amazing! However, I wonder whether It'll be another stalled project?

I think Dave Bing has rushed out and is attempting this project as a last ditch effort in hopes of making the Greenway Redevelopment Project his legacy, before the EFM comes in and takes over.

Personally, I question the timing and I think this could be the dagger in Bing's final month's as Mayor. At a time when the city needs life depending services such as police, fire and EMS more than anything, Dave being is trying to build a Greenway Redevelopment Project.

I realize that much of the money is suppose to come from the private sector but lives and the quality of life is more important for Detroiter's at this time.

I'm a bit confused on this one?

The muckraker article, while shedding some good light, is somewhat confusing:

The six blocks, from Chene to St. Aubin and Pierce to Wilkins, is bustling with bulldozers and construction workers this morning after four days of clearing trees, tilling the land and cleaning up tires and other trash. Crews are soon expected to demolish six buildings, including houses, an old church and a school at the corner of Pierce and Chene.

Looking down from Google aerial images, the church and school I see at Pierce and Chene are no within the boundaries specified. So maybe the current bulldozing is within that six-block area, and they are also going to demo the old school building and church? I'm not all that familiar with the history of this part of the east side.....what school and church was that?

Also:

If all goes as planned, a developer will revive a long-buried creek, called Bloody Run, which sweeps through the project area. The project would expand the Dequindre Cut greenway to Elmwood Cemetery, then south to the Detroit River.
The academy wants to build a sporting complex for students across the street.

Across the street? Across the street from what? Which street?

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad to see a long neglected neighborhood get a clean up, I'm glad they don't seem to (yet) be forcing out the last few residents from their occupied homes, and I'm glad to hear of the potential future investment. From the look of the aerial, there can't be more than ten homes combined left amongst those blocks, and I don't know how many of them are occupied. I hope they are able to preserve the block-street grid, rather than shutting down a bunch of through streets and creating something else annoying that you have to drive around.

It's really cool that they want to bring Bloody Run to the surface again.

I agree with your assessment, and personally I think Bing is grasping @ straws. First he announced the Brewster demolition, which I feel was kind of ill timed, and needless because the money could could be better spent addressing Detroit neighborhoods that have more urgent issues. Now this. If the creek stays buried for another 10 years, what difference will it make in the larger scheme of Detroit problems.

Was this the aerial rendering you were referring to? I think I outlined the the location of the bulldozing.

This would be a hell of a project to keep secret for very long. Obviously we've all heard about it previously, but to have construction going on and no announcement is a bit puzzling.

Drove around the area in the late afternoon, and it is pretty amazing what they've done. Kept that little cinderblock dreamhome that couple built back when mortgages were easy, it'll probably become someone's office over-seeing the project.

Bulldozers were runnin' around, but I didn't see a ONE of 'em driven by anyone who looked like JoAnn Watson.

Like many people on DetroitYes, I've been a regular for about 12 years (give or take a year or so). I see a lot of newcomers posting comments, expressing their surprising disappoint with the dysfunctions of Detroit City Government. I'm curious to know if you thought things in the city were actually turning around this time? Did you think there was (or is) really a movement happening? For a lot of us who have watched Detroit for decades, this comes as no surprise to us. We've witnessed so-called "comeback after comeback."

Some of the major comeback stories of the past were the birth of the Ren-Cen, General Motors relocating to the Ren-Cen from the New Center, The People Mover, Michael Jackson and Don Barden's Amusement Park, demolishing the entire River Front for the Casinos (horrible idea), The "actual" Casinos that were built, Hockeytown, the demolition of Tiger Stadium, Commerica Park, Ford Field and so much more. All of these events were VERY BIG DEALS and were thought to be the come back ticket of their present times in Detroit! And yet, the population has still bled below 700k people... and now faster than ever.

Detroit is an amazing city if you can HONESTLY accept it for what it is. Detroit will never be what it once was but a lot of things are still happening. So many new and first time marks, but people are still leaving in droves. As a person who understands Detroit, City Hall is THE reason why people leave the city. It's always been about what goes on in those council chambers and they're NOTRORIOUSLY known for not getting anything done. AND I MEAN NOTHING! No progress comes from City Hall. This is why Detroit is Detroit. We are some tough and creative people. Look at what Detroiter's have done and look what we do around the world today. The reason nothing gets done IN the city is because City Hall will not give people a platform to live and be successful. So we leave.

Until we have a completely new city hall, Detroit will always be Detroit. And those of us who know Detroit, know city hall will be city hall for at least another two generations.
