150 ft. is the maximum height for ladders, so many of Gilberts taller skyscrapers, such as the 420 ft. One Woodward Ave., depend on building sprinkler fire systems...
So again... it's "NORMAL" for Detroit not to have working fire trucks....just blame the messenger and dont ask too many questions... Who cares if granny's homeowners insurance costs $4000+ a year because Detroit entire fleet of fire trucks leak.... I'm glad I dont work downtown praying that the "sprinkler" system will active on time and save me because I know the DFD equiptment is broke down....

Why would a sprinkler system fail in a high rise? A sprinkler head has a glass plug with liquid in it that causes the glass plug to break once it reaches around 165°F. Thus, releasing the water. In high rises, there are also mandated reserve water tanks at the top of the building to ensure constant flow pressure.

They even mandate it in smaller apartment buildings now in Detroit. I was looking at a one-bedroom apartment in La Vogue in Palmer Park and saw 8 sprinkler heads inside that one-bedroom apartment. I asked why they would need it on a building this size and they answered that it's now required in the city by law.

As for Granny's homeowner insurance rates, why doesn't she get a sprinkler system if a fire policy is why its skyrocketed to $4,000+ a year [[it's only 50 cents to $2.50 a sq. ft to install). http://www.doityourself.com/stry/firesprinklersystem

Ok. I'll go with that. Go with a volunteer force to boot and forget new fire equipment, problem solved.

Detroit could be anywhere in the metro. Don't go counting chickens till the eggs hatch.

Then why does the Microsoft Careers website specify Detroit, Grand Rapids, and Southfield with only Detroit having a Manager and Asst. Manager positions? If it were to open in Somerset Collection or 12 Oaks wouldn't we think it would say "Troy" or "Novi"? But then again, it wouldn't be as exciting...

A Microsoft Store would be nice, considering we already have 3 Apple Stores in the area.

It probably will be downtown if Gilbert has anything to do wih it. It is a shame that a developer is more of a cheerleader for Detroit than the Mayor is. I would love to see Microsoft and Apple in the downtown area with strict tight security patrolling the downtown area. I would love to see better retail on Woodward near the corner of Grand Blvd. I would also love to see a Best Buys or MicroCenter open on Jefferson in a strip mall near the downtown area.

Best Buy is a dying company. It is closing stores not opening them.

Micro Center is not dying. I would love to see one on Jefferson probably at Chene or Mount Elliot

Seriously? When was the last time this reporter has been on this block? Where does he get his research from, a 5 year old street directory?

lol, I thought the same thing. I'm guessing he took a stroll around the block using Google earth, which is also why he neglected to mention the National Theater [[because it doesn't have a sign out front)

Now let's see what Gilbert does with the remaining buildings on the block. Will he become another Illith, and destroy "structurally unsound" buildings for more parking? Or become Gistok's personal savior and salvage the National Theatre?

The Monroe block announcement will be soon too, it only make sense.

11? They usually close that in an hour! Might be some fight left in the ole gal after all!

Do editors exist anymore? You would think, if this guy was so ignorant, someone else might have caught it.

From what I heard early last year, and what others have also commented on in this forum, is that DECG has owned the old garage for a few years and began to evict the remaining tenants several months ago "for a future development." Since it appears Gilbert was in the process of acquiring his stake in Greektown Casino during this time, it would make sense that he would squelch news of this until he got the casino. It does fit in with his publicly stated desire to tie Greektown into his acquisitions along Woodward.

prior to this announcement I had been told that schostak was involved with the redevelopment of the garage site and that it would include residential, or at least that was being tossed around. perhaps they're working together.

i also saw Gilbert at Buffalo Wild Wings last night which is directly across the street... highly unlikely the two are related but figured I'd point out he enjoys crap food like the rest of us.

I agree, though they are opening smaller stores...basically cell phone stores. But the point is, I don't think Detroit should be developing urban adapted retail space for a ton of big box type retail. I think City Target, or large clothing stores are fine. People always want to try stuff on, and typically clothing retailers can outcompete online only retailers.
