so, now that we get "free" admission, how are they doing this, are they checking ID to see if you are from Wayne, Oakland, or Macomb?? because I haven't got a Wayne county ID...

and if they are checking ID's... doesn't this disenfranchise a large number of poorer Detroiters, as I've heard that inner city and poor people don't have ID's..... [[thus the voter ID controversy)

so is this an attempt to keep poor detroiters out of the DIA????

I'm confused...if you don't have a Wayne County ID, where does your driver's license list you from?

According to the Craig show on WDET today a senior representative from the DIA said they would not be checking for drivers licenses but rather asking where the attendee lived or asking for a utitlity bill or mail to prove residence if the need be. .. That ofcourse would lead to people probably lying about where they live but guess thats yet to be seen.

I wonder how well this is going to work out when the cold weather gets here and the homeless decide it's more comfortable to wander around the DIA than on the streets.

wow, thats easy for you to say from your Ivory tower.... but do you know the statistics of poor and minorities that DO NOT have ID??? these people are being shut out of the DIA for lack of identification.... this is an elitist attack on minorities and the poor, the suburbanites [[most likely WITH ID), are taking over.......

Yes, but scattered in two different business districts. One on Big Beaver Road [[exit 69 off I-75), and another off of Crooks Road near Long Lake [[exit 72).

Troy also has the most expensive gas station in the tri-county area, the BP at Big Beaver Road and Crooks Road.

An admission fee would more effectively keep them out.

Proud my community, Ferndale, voted 79% in favor of funding the DIA! I knew it would pass here,, the amount surprised me.

It was convenient for the DIA that the gross over-staffing of the Detroit Water Dept. was announced after the vote. The tax money "saved" here could easily run their DIA. and more. Imagine the the waste of money that must go on in all the other Depts. Suburban "yes" voters were conned. But hey enjoy your "free" visit.

Goodness yes, and don't get stuck in some areas on E, the gas stations are far and few in between!

That statistic always amuses me. A state ID card costs $10, and the fee is waived if you are on nearly any kind of public assistance. The requirements are so low you can bring in nearly any official-looking piece of paper with your name on it and get one.

I grew up in Romeo. We never went to the DIA in school.

Newsflash here, the city has no say in the DIA's finances, the money collected from the tax will not be touched by the city of Detroit. The Founder's Society handles all the money and management and many of the members hail from Grosse Pointe and Oakland County.

Where did you find these stats?

..... and yet you have money to buy a computer and pay for internet service....

Maybe you would like to see the DIA buy "special" bike rack type metal constructions so that the homeless have a place to hitch up their shopping carts while they're traipsing off to check out the Vermeer's, Brueghel's and Cezanne's?

[[No disrespect to the homeless intended.)

My wife works in Ferndale, and she expected them to vote yes as well. Also, I think my wife voted yes, despite my ramblings to her.

you see, the liberals were kind enough to supply the local libraries with computers with internet access... there is even talk of installing shields so other people don't inadvertantly view the porn im fapping to........

Really? I can't think of one building in troy with any architectural interest except, maybe, the old standard federal building

The architecture in Troy isn't even pretty. It's unimaginative. I've said it before: Medium-high-rises with strip windows and parking lots. No actual city center. Just mile after mile of institutional-looking buildings that can't be easily repurposed. Few opportunities for walking or biking. Again: How is this ever going to be worth MORE than it is right now?

And yet, Troy is healthier than most cities in the region. I work in Troy and I see more people jogging and bike riding in Troy than any other city in the metro area. The missing man from Troy is an avid cyclist.

I respect the anecdotal evidence to Troy's health, and I understand that its books look better than Detroit's for sure. But the places in Oakland County with the best prognosis for the future seem to be places like Birmingham or Rochester, places with histories, downtowns, density, etc. And I just don't see that in Troy.

As opposed to your anecdotal evidence of few opportunities for walking and biking? Troy does have sidewalks. What has city centers done for Birmingham and Rochester? I love how this forum things if you slap some stores on a street front and give them a trendy name, it makes it some more stable and desirable city.

Do you think there is a difference between walking down this sidewalk?

    And walking down this sidewalk?

Do you think there is something more going on here than slapping up storefronts and giving things trendy names? Do you see why the future of one environment might be brighter than another? Why one might be more pleasant for walking, while another might be more forbidding?

    Discuss.

Are you sure about Troy being healthy?
