36 Detroit gang members arrested in crackdown

    Associated Press

Detroit -- U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents have helped round up 36 members of violent street gangs in Detroit.
ICE officials said Friday seven of those arrested were non-U.S. citizens, including six from Mexico and one from El Salvador.
The arrests are part of a nationwide crackdown on violent street gangs called Operation Community Shield, in which ICE agents work with state and local police agencies.

Those arrested include members of the Latin Counts, Folks, Surenos and Jamaican Posse, operating on Detroit's southwest and northwest sides.
The agency says all of those arrested have criminal records.
The campaign began with intelligence gathering in October, and agents started making arrests in March.

Apparently we have some small unorganized ones as well as international gangs that use the border for trafficking.

Even through Detroit does have various violent street gangs, most of them want to keep a very low profile so that they get caught by the police. Over the past 30 years, violent Detroit street gangs were a plague in Southwest Detroit until G.R.A.C.E. an organization devised by various SW Detroit churches put a stop to most of the gangs including Detroit Kings headed by Pablo Bonila.

In the meantime in Detroit's west, east and NW sides lots of black Detroit street gangs like the Cony-onlies, Black Killerz, Young Boys INC. Six Mile Smurfs, Zone 8's, and Eroll Flynns had been destroyed by Coleman Young's Cronies. Now The Dexter Boys, Fenkell Boys, P-Rock, Chi-Town, Joy Rds. East Warrens, Young Sqauds of Islamic Warrendale, 7 Miles, 6 Miles and many more are poping up all the ghettohoods. They are not a violent as the Purple Gang, Il Costa Nostra or the Oakland Sugarhouse Gang, but they may rise one day to rule the streets and terrorize Detroiters with the power of fear.

Jmil - maybe it's just that there's a lot of overlap between the two groups? County-wide, given that the recent mess involving the Highway Men also is alleged to involve T. Attala. Perhaps the "gang-public servant" is greater than we think...

As long as you have disenfranchised youth, you're going to have gangs.

We're going to have more gang violence in schools next year. We have had a number of rival gangmembers all being sent to the same schools.

    36 Detroit gang members arrested

Doug Guthrie / The Detroit News

Detroit -- A nationwide crackdown on alleged violent gangs resulted Friday in the arrests of 36 people in southwest Detroit by local police and agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Those arrested are believed to represent four different gangs, the Latin Counts, Folks, Sureos and Jamaican Posse. One individual arrested is believed to be the leader in the Sureos gang hierarchy, according to officials. Seven of those arrested were non-U.S. citizens, including six from Mexico and one from El Salvador.
Everyone arrested today already has a criminal record, said ICE spokesman Khaalid Walls. Their prior convictions include assault, larceny, narcotics, weapons, malicious destruction of property and probation violation charges.
"Gang related activities and those who choose to partake in them do so knowing full well the negative impact their actions can have on the neighborhoods throughout our fine city," Detroit Police Chief James Barren said in a statement released today by federal authorities. "We hope these arrests will call attention to our never-ending commitment to combat, suppress and prevent future gang related behavior."
The local/federal cooperative is called Operation Community Shield, Walls said. The project organized under the ICE National Gang Unit identifies violent street gangs and gathers intelligence on their membership, associates, criminal activities and international movements. The goal is to disrupt and dismantle gang operations by tracing and seizing cash, weapons and other assets.
In three years, the federal/local initiative has arrested more than 13,000 street alleged gang members and their associates belonging to more than 900 different gangs. More than 150 of those arrested were believed to be gang leaders.
Along with Detroit, other areas targeted for the anti-gang initiative include Cleveland, Indianapolis, Tampa, Fla., Dallas and Ft. Worth, Texas, the Route 222 Corridor of Eastern Pennsylvania, Los Angeles, Milwaukee, Raleigh/Durham, N.C., Oklahoma City and Rochester, N.Y.
The effort in southwest Detroit involves Detroit Police, Michigan State Police, the Wayne County Sheriff's Department, Wayne County Prosecutor's Office, U.S. Marshals Service, FBI, ICE, ATF, DEA and the Michigan Department of Corrections.

Yes, they have gangs. These are members of their own organized crime families. Their business is to sell drugs and terrorize anyone whom gets in their way. Often time returning to their homes in the suburbs.

Yes, Detroit has gangs, just look at the City of Detroit administration; they have raped, robbed, pillaged, plundered, extorted and murdered the citizens of Detroit for years. The gang is called "Politicians and their Appointees".

From a casual observation, as a response to Detroit 'gangs', I believe, [[unlike most big cities), Detroit's unique and vulnerable dynamic of declining population and community instability has indirectly disrupted the uniformity, continuity, and the engenderization of gang sponsorship and militancy.

Detroit's fragile existence, especially the past 30 years or so, has never been ripe for the politics of street gang autonomy. That's not to say Detroit's neighborhoods are negate of street politics, no doubt brought on by the extraordinary violence of amerikkkana' life. To be sure, the politics of the street, that is the current juvenocracy,[[domination of Black males, 25 years and younger who wields considerable economic, social, and moral influence), remains imminent within Detroit.

Strictly from conjecture, with exception of a few 'hoods', ie; SW Detroit, and Near West-side, [[Dexter, Linwood, Puritan) and perhaps the Mile Rd areas, where areas that remain relatively 'community based', if you will, one will be hard pressed to fine a true multi-generational concept, [[or G's) of a gang, as you would in Chicago, and on the East Coast and West Coast.

By law enforcement watch, as well as personal observation, affiliates relating to a true 'G' sponsorship within Detroit are likely to be, The 'Dexter Dogs' [[up to 3 generations, aka Y.B.I, ), 'LA', or Linwood Ave, [[3 G's from NFL, Linwood Players), and PA, split set of Six mile syndicate, and Puritan Ave.[[3 G's from P-Bishops, and Sconi-only). More obviously, the recent immigration [[past 20 years) of Chicago Chicano/and Latino based gangs to SW Detroit , the Latin Counts, Folks, Cash Money Posse [[CMP), are all past generational.

Bottom line, Detroit's overall unique destruction, has perhaps created a peculiar street culture or street gang meaning that has a vicious life and logic of its own, and cannot be readily visible nor controlled, [[unlike other notable major cities, that may be more formatic). Consequently, there is a unique pattern of street politics, that has yet been written in the books of solutions, in terms of moral, corruptness, and law enforcement.

So then, that's the weird dichotomy we face, in that, our state of historical detriction, indirectly has helped eliminate the presence of street-gang ascension and distribution__go figure!

MS-13 is a very dangerous gang. It is the fastest growing gang in the country. They're almost in every State, including Alaska. The gangs has also reached both Canada and Europe. This gang has put fear in L.A. based Bloods, Crips, Chicago's 'Gangsta Disciples and NYC: Latin Kings. Gangs that are both organized and have been around for decades.

The tag that you saw is them marking their territory. They busted the gang in Richmond; that's outside of Oakland [[not to far from me.).

Hey D7 that's interesting, even though historically, Detroit's humongous drug trade cartels have stifled any growth or infiltration from major outside gang activity with a 'Do not pass go' code, [[ie; LA based Bloods and Crips or Chicago based GD's or BSR's), in the past few years, there is word on the street that Detroit's drug supply has shifted toward a straight Mexican based source, rather than it's past middle man connection of the East Coast drug trade. I wonder if that shift has anything to do with, as you say, the influence of the 'fast growing' Mexican based MS13 drug trade?

Fictional character; these guy are crazy and have no fear. They have gone as far as putting bullets on a police officer's front porch letting him know what time it is. Their code is, when you kill someone and the police is near the scene, don't run like most gang members, walk. They don't you having any fear period.

Their trademark weapon is the machete; similar to what you see with Haitian gangs. They hack up their gang rivals and some are cannibals, eating their enemies. Their biggest rival is the 18th Street Gang in L.A.
