Thanks P6944h51!! And for those of you not familiar with the Russell A. Alger Jr. house... today it is the centerpiece of the Grosse Pointe War Memorial center and gardens, located on Lakeshore Road just east of Fisher Rd.

There is one house I've always wondered about on Chicago Blvd and LaSalle. It is on the SE corner...beautiful limestone facade. Anyone know of this home?

I was in this house many years ago. It's very ornate with a living room to the right of the front door and a smaller one to the left. Behind the big living room is the dining room with glass doors that open to a terrace. The elegant staircase rises in the middle of the wide central hall with passages on both sides. On the landing is a large south-facing stained glass window. IIRC, the basement was nicely finished with a terrazzo floor. One oddity, I thought, was that there were no fireplaces in the house. The owner at that time told me there was a duplicate of the house in Florida.

[[Patrick I'm sending you a private message.)

From The American Architect, 1920. The picture is identified as "House of James H. Newberry..." I'm guessing it's just a mistake in the name. The front of the house is at the top of the drawing of the floor plan.

Hey Neil and p69rrh51...I have another "mystery" house challenge. This one is a fairly large Tudor located on the NE corner of LaSalle and Atkinson. I had a friend at WSU that lived around the block and she didn't know much about the house. That whole neighborhood west of the Lodge has some amazing gems [[most are hidden).

Even the city of Detroit Recreation Dept.'s web page mis-attributes the Casino to Kahn.
