I get a very different impression of Ferndale. It's hardly "extremely white", in fact the schools are overwhelmingly black.

Adults in the city, are rather diverse, both racially and economically. Everything from rednecks to African Americans to young singles of all stripes.

And I don't think someone would move to Ferndale if they were "afraid of the city". They're practically in the city, and many of the Detroit problems are now Ferndale problems. They've had multiple gun incidents in schools, some white flight, some decay, along with gentrification and more positive trends.

Seeing these buildings is quite a walk down memory lane. When my friends and I were going to Menjo's and Backstage througout the 1980s, we would wind up driving around these neighborhoods to find parking places, or just to sight-see. I believe that, at that time, all of the buildings were still inhabited. The incredible art deco and old world architecture was so cool to look at; I remember wanting to live here when I could afford my own apartment. Now, so many of them are in ruins. I hope they can somehow, someday be saved.

Does anyone on this forum have a list of the recently renovated apartments and apartments that are slated to be renovated? Pictures would be great too!

Does anybody know what this activity represents? Is it an actual renovation?

Work on the Palmer Lodge appears to be progressing nicely. Great looking new windows.

The windows are sympathetic to the originals while being considerably more efficient. The developer has done a nice job so far with all of their rehabs!

When I finished college and got my first "real" job, the first thing I did was to move from my parents' house to Palmer Park. This was in 1977. I lived in two different buildings during my 3 years in PP, both of which appear in the OP's picture gallery. I drove through the neighborhood for the first time in many years a few months ago and was mildly shocked at how bad things have gotten over there.

Nice to know that efforts are underway to restore many of these buildings, Palmer Park was a cool place to live in those days.

More great news on progress in the Palmer Park apartment district, with the Sarasota, Seville, and Palmer Lodge apartments all nearing a completion of renovation!
