We just had a terrific winter storm here in Las Vegas. After two days, have an inch and a half of snow. It melted today. Locals are still in a panic.

I love my adopted home, but the locals here [[largely from the LA area) are really candy-asses when it comes to weather.

They had 35.9" in Flagstaff, AZ! They're really struggling to cope with it too.

I recall a record snowfall in Michigan [[1970s) where you had to first shovel out an area next to a sidewalk just to make room for the snow you'd next shovel from the sidewalk! It started out only up to my chest but after all the shoveling, it was too high to see out of the hole left behind.

The local kids had fun tunneling out snowcaves underneath it all.

YAY more power outages!! Thank you El-Nino.

The problem with Flagstaff is they are at an elevation of over 7,000 feet. Much of snowfall in the west depends on the terrain, as you know. But, yeah, that's a lot of snow for anywhere.

Today will be sunny and 82 degrees in St. Petersburg, FL. Good thing I brought some SPF 30 sunscreen...

The forecast changed? They were saying it was to start at 7:00 am today, until 6:00 am Monday morning. It's 9:00 am now, and no strong winds, it rained like hell last night though, with a few claps of thunder.

I've lived here 58 years and never had to leave my home because of the weather or storm damage. I'll be sure to remind you of that the next time you have to leave or barricade yours.

As I often play for extended periods of time - off grid --
I've become a big proponent of the Goal Zero product line

Two of my favorites that fit easily in pockets, backpacks, bags, etc.
    - The Goal Zero Venture 70 Power pack
    https://www.goalzero.com/shop/ventur...microlighting/
    - A string of Goal Zero Mini LED lights
    https://www.goalzero.com/shop/yeti-a...ini-usb-light/

Throw in a few 10ft long USB 2.0 extender cables,
I can light up, and power devices all around me with ease.

No candles, no flames, no lantern fuels to spill, - easy , quick power.

Where are you? In the back yard?! I'm not being funny, I know someone who camps out on their property in the tri-county area.

Not my thing, but hey at least you're aware and prepared......!!

I have a crank generator radio!

And so I made it through the windstorm and past sunset without losing power at all. Got to love Wyandotte!

Zacha341 - it's obvious you did NOT click the links
because those are stock photos from the Goal Zero website.

I disappear in the park systems of North America in various seasons
including winter, and have no issue being UNavailable for days on end.
Instead or "relying" on electric power, you use it sparingly, as a crutch.
Same with the GPS, turn it on occasionally, get location, turn it off.
Really not needed, but nice to have music, light, nav backup, etc., etc.

I walk it like I talk it.
Tried and true equipment, not hype/glitz/marketing from salespeople.

You've got me on that one, I apologize. I just quickly look at the photo. Thanks.

    When will this wind end?

    No problem Zacha341.
Used be a time a few years back where we lost power often in Warren.
I raised bloody hell for months with DTE on social media, logging each
event, calling them out publicly on it. It has become much, much better.

Many people without power tonight, though. [[estimate 47,000)

GO underground......like they do in other places in the world

Michigan ranks 4th nationally for power outages.
State residents, businesses put up with more
outages per capita than any other state

Last year DTE came into my St. Clair Shores neighborhood, trimmed many trees, and replaced some equipment. Ordinarily this 2 day windstorm would mean a power outage in my neighborhood [[like in all previous windstorms). But no outage this time. My neighbors and I were all shocked.

It had gotten so bad in the past here in the Shores, that I believe 10%-20% of homeowners now have gas powered generators. In past outages the drone of generators sounded like everyone was mowing their lawn at the same time....

I'll have to try those. I'll shop for the 20 pack, because you know I will try out one or two as soon as I get them.

The red ones should work best if preserving night vision is a concern. Some astronomers wear red goggles as a precaution against stray light. Having to wait for your pupils to redilate is such a bummer.

There is no night vision to worry about if you use a pack of the green.
-- Why - because your whole house is illuminated without dark areas.

I think Jimaz has a side job as a pirate and wears an eye patch as well

Green allows for more visual acuity and better differentiation
between colors, but this is of course at low-light levels.

Adventure racers, hikers, and those that actually spend time, moving
in the dark, will actually go with the green filters instead of the red ones.

Bear in mind these are single use, work only for a few hours and aren't all that inexpensive unless you can find some kind of bulk deal.

LED flashlights and rechargeable batteries will work out better over time.

Or Hurricane style lamps using lamp oil.
