This is great news for Detroit! Cruise ships can now dock on our side of the river, etc.

Seen the first "cruise ship" at the dock today. Was expecting something a little more impressive. Hell the Princess would've looked better there.

the hyperbole surrounding that thing was yet another reminder of why I hate local news.

Is the QE II the second ship named after the first Queen Elizabeth or the first ship named after Queen Elizabeth II?

Maybe some Temptations cover band giving a concert in Chene Park for the boomers I'm assuming cruise the Great Lakes to listen and dance to, a Motown Music Spectacular or somesuch? Since the terminal is, apparently, located close to Chene Park, and it makes sense to highlight the riverfront.

I've only been on one cruise, and that was in much warmer climates, but I had the impression the cruise line acted sort of as a middleman for snorkeling trips and such that they basically resold to their guests at, I'm sure, a markup. In a similar vein, bike tours and Segway tours and walking tours, and trips to the DIA or the Charles Wright museum [[with proper coaches, not DDOT ;-) and even the Henry Ford, or tickets to ball games, or buckets of discounted casino chips, all these things I imagine they would arrange on their own.

Neither.... when the Queen Elizabeth and Queen Mary were launched in the 1930s, they were named after Queen Consorts... Queen Mary was the wife of George V [[d. 1936), and Queen Elizabeth was the consort to George V [[d. 1952). These were the grandmother and mother of current Queen Elizabeth. The QE2 as its' name has been shortened to... is the 2nd ship named after Queen Elizabeth Consort. and was retired a few years ago as well.

The Queen Regents... Queen Mary I [[1553-1558), Queen Mary II [[1688-1694), Queen's Elizabeth I [[1558-1603), and Queen Elizabeth II [[1952-present) have not had ships named after them by the Cunard Line.

Amd none of these ships could ever have a port-of-call at Detroit... they're too large to make it thru the St. Laurence Seaway locks and the Welland Canal. No ocean bound ship can be more that about 740 ft. long. All 1000 footer lake ore carriers are locked into the upper 4 great lakes, and could never make it to Lake Ontario, let alone the Atlantic.

Grand Prix weekend they had the River Taxi taking people to the island.

Are there any river tours that go up/down the Detroit River? I see the Diamond Belle at Rivard Plaza all the time, but I believe that is for rental on special occasions?
