MCS - thanks for the update on the work going on there. It's encouraging to hear some positive news about the building for the first time in many years. Of course, it won't seem like much to obsevers unless chutes or dumpsters or new windows appear. But if engineers and architects are on site working, that's a good sign. Occasional power to the building would be great as well. I drove by there once last year during a movie shoot at night, seeing the lower floor lit again was a real experience.

kryptonite, it was definitely kept me suspicious since you couldn't see anything from the outside other than the occasional plastic in the window frames, but being inside and seeing the photo presentation made me a believer. The crews spend a considerable amount of time going through everything with a fine tooth comb to make sure everything is picked up. Then they send it down an elevator shaft, on the mezzanine A, then the bags are carried down by hand to the dumpster, the plan is once temp power is put in the building is to put in a service elevator on the west end, they can't touch the elevator hall on the east as those need to remain historically accurate. So we'll see, right now it seems like a lot of the action occurs behind the building when they drain water every couple days

MCS- Did they happen to mention what the time frame was on getting the windows installed or the roofs fixed?

Thanks mcsdetroitfriend... I guess a picture does say a thousand words... and by far... more than one derogatory one...

What a great building. I would love to see it become the hub for burban rail and streetrail radiating to all parts of Detroit. It may not seem central to folks now, but that very fact may be the one major thing it has going for it. On the on hand, there is plenty of space for building massive infrastructure and on the other, the developers can have a go at inspiring residential projects that use the value of transit oriented design. 20 years from now, this area could be a textbook case of how to frame new urban centers for transit. But the planning has to be of a very high standard for that to happen.

No definite time frame, they mentioned how they would be starting from the top down. They also mentioned the windows they order all need to be custom sized as well as historically accurate, along with the frames [[Broderick tower ran into the same issue). So it's going to take time, but hopefully we'll see some fresh things in the new year.

The new roof will start with the top tower roof which will be completely redone, They aren't just going to pour down rubber, it's gonna involve masonry, new support columns and a new deck. Very excited

It would be nice if the high speed rail would pick up at the train station. I had that the plan was to just clean up the building. That would be nice. The building would be a nice location and the interior would be a nice place fore movies to be made.

Thank you for the excellent photos! I witnessed crews working on the Depot in August and kept my fingers crossed that this would mark the new beginning of the fantastic structure...looks good so far! It will be a long and costly project though...it is amazing how fast it was torn to pieces. Every single one of those crooks resposible should have been shot on site.

Its hard to give Matty credit for what might yet be a PR stunt, but at least there is some real work occurring. Hope it continues after he's finished off the other bridge, the court and MDOT.

I wish they could deliver a high speed line from MCS to Metro Airport.
Looking at aerial views I believe the track is already in place.
This would get people quickly downtown into the city and their first views of detroit would be a restored MCS cathedral station.
If connector lines were built to connect MCS with the people mover
this would then quickly transport people to all corners of the city.
It would be a wonderful thing

I don't understand all of this talk about MCS becoming a light rail station. Most light rail stations are a canopy supported by four polls and a ticket machine.

Never seen Manny at any meetings, only Nora [[his wife), this is her project IMO

Perhaps the renovation on the Boderick Tower and the completion of the Cadillac Building will put the MCS owner in the spotlight to get it together.

What would you do with Michigan Central Station?
The family of station owner Manuel [[Matty) Moroun created a website for fans of the old depot to post their ideas....

In the little over a week since the website went live, dozens of suggestions have been posted, everything from "Light it up at night!" to "Downhill mountain bike course" and "Fabulous space for an art museum!"

Default Thanks for posting the link.

I'd added my ideas based on my journey here to San Francisco, viewing some of the vintage train stations in other major cities during my stops.

A member posted a photo on the facebook page showing what appear to be a new set of window frames underneath the carriage entrance as well as one of the arched windows next to it. Can anyone confirm? Both these basement windows were fully covered by wood planks.

    Thanks guys

It is interesting to see that even though the tower is a very long 342 ft., it is very shallow.... with the center of the tower only 54ft across, and 108 ft. across at the ends.

While such floor space is not ideal for commercial use, it appears perfect for residential [[lots of windows per unit). It would also be ideal for hotel floors, such as was mentioned as a casino complex.

Interestingly the east end has 6 elevators, while the west end has 2 elevators.
