Excellent thread. Yes, downtown could use more retail, but a LOT has to happen to make it viable for the retailers of today.
One common factor in cities that have prosperous "downtown" retail,...
The March 2013 issue of Philadelphia Magazine features a story, Being White in Philadelphia, and it has set off a firestorm.
The link will take you to the full article so you can judge for your...
Just to get back to the original question, part of the reason that Chicago has received so much media attention to it's murder rate is what I refer to as "the worlds colliding". While many of the...
Yes, the store closed to the public at 5:45 p.m. on Monday, January 17, 1983.
The reasons for the closing had much more to do with the serious decline in sales revenue downtown, than with the old...
As many know the Detroit and Newark riots were about 1 week apart from each other. In both cities the downtown areas were spared from major damage. However both downtown areas suffered a mortal blow...

It's fine to draw comparisons with other cities when it comes to retail and genera offerings at that cities 'downtown" area, but I also agree that tearing apart another city it not the way to go.
...
It is very easy to be cynical about any downtown retail project, but lets see what does get announced in January.
As for setting expectations, a Target would do very well downtown, even more than...
At the rate Detroit's population is going, Boston will have a larger population in just a few more years. Pretty sad considering that Detroit's peak was just over 2 million, and Boston's was just...
Yes, I remember the red awnings well, and the national media had a field day reporting it. The Statler Hotel being the poster child for downtown buildings empty at that time.

Given the Ren Center layout, and how it relates to the rest of downtown, it's retail potential is limited to service businesses, and only a handful at that.
Many of us remember when the Ren Center...
Sadly it does get to this, in some cases our parents, or other elders become the children, and we as their grown children, nieces, nephews etc have to make the hard choices for them.

Boston has an overall score of 97, and like NYC and San Fran has an "off the charts" cost of living. Boston also scored 100 for public transit.

I've had GEICO for close to 10 years, and I'm happy with them.
I had one accident while with GEICO, and the "other side" claimed that their "infant" was injured in the accident. The "infant" was...
This is circa 1980, and I always try to post this story each year, so here goes.
For those who are old enough to remember downtown in the 1970's, things were going down hill, but there were...
From time to time, posters will ask where they can find interior pictures of Hudson's.
The following link has some unique interior pictures from early 1997, just before the building was gutted for...

Both Sears and The Bay stores in downtown Vancouver were vandalized, however in Boston no one...
Apple has shown some savy in selecting and designing "downtown" locations.
There were Apple stores in the Philly suburbs for years before they opened last year on Walnut Street in Philly. That...
To this list of top malls, add the combined Copely Place/Prudential Center in Boston.
These 2 complexes give you the anchor stores of Neiman Marcus, Barney's, Lord and Taylor, and Saks. The Saks...
Why we have a beautiful downtown mall, Cadillac Square, you know the one that was built so Hudson's could move out of it's aging building, the one that also has Sears and Penny's.
After all it was...
That's kind of what I touched on in my previous post. I think Mayor Coleman Young was a Mayor of the times and a Mayor for the people. He was loved by a population of Detroit that was almost...
